Summary
FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016
This was to be her last day alive. The renowned criminal psychologist Ira Samin prepared her suicide thoroughly. The death of her eldest daughter had weighed too heavily on her conscience for her to carry on and she yearned for one last drink to raise a toast to oblivion. Her morbid plans are interrupted and she is called in to negotiate a gruesome hostage situation at a radio station where a psychopath is playing a morbid game.
While the show is on air, he calls people from the phonebook at random. If they pick up the phone with a certain slogan, a hostage is set free. If they don't, then the hostage is unceremoniously shot. The man threatens to continue playing this game until his fiancée arrives at the studio. The only problem is that his fiancée died several months ago....
AMOK is a gripping audiodrama and tense psychological hostage thriller set in a Berlin Radio Station, from the internationally renowned author of the best-selling Audible Original Drama The Child.

Amok
If you could sum up Amok in three words, what would they be?
Like a movie
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
The all star cast of narrators was the reason I bought this, along with the fact Fitzek had previously published 'The Child', aother incredible audio drama that I thought could never be surpassed.
Any additional comments?
Listening to this really is like watching a movie play out in your head. I instantly took to the main character;Samim, I am a sucker for the leading lady/man who has a dark and unfortunate past that has lead them to the point of despair and suicide, but they keep hanging on to do some good for the world. In short, this was a great listen. The narration was superb and I challenge anyone to say they didn't enjoy it. Fittzek has done it again with another great storyline and audible have done it again bringing it to life: a magnificent duo.

The Case of the Missing "I"
This isn't bad, that's for sure. The quality cast give it their all and it's a fairly entertaining way to spend 8 hours. That's actually longer than the average full cast production has tended to be too so it represents good value for money. The production values are high and the acting is good enough. But . . . it did feel a little over-dramatised at times and the succession of Aha! moments as a series of characters outlined their hidden motives and shocking plans did grate a little.
I'm a big fan of the efforts that Audible are going to with full cast productions as a supplement to traditional audiobooks but this one doesn't hit the heights of some of their other efforts and is good rather than great.
So maybe the title is missing an I . . . and rather than AMOK it should say I AM OK (but not great).

Excellent narration, good storyline but...
the musical dramatisation was a bit much & off-putting. Actors were very good, first time I've listened to an audio book using different actors for each character & I would listen to similar again. Without the music!

Gripping drama
This was more than a book - it was an amazing drama. I am unable to read or watch television at the moment, and what a welcome change to listen to Amok where I felt immersed in the story. I was a little confused at first with the different characters and very nearly gave up but I'm so pleased that I persevered.
I congratulate and thank the author, the production team and the actors for a welcome break!

Irritating and overly-dramatic production
Any additional comments?
The plot was reasonable, but the production was annoying, although professional. Everything was over-dramatised, with thumping music after seemingly every paragraph. The producer also enjoyed over-playing sound effects and telling all the actors to breathe very noisily, one of them in particular to squelchily sniff all the time and, for no reason at all, several of them to randomly and un-realistically cough in the middle of sentences. By the end, I was honestly wishing the heroine would die because I was so bored of her.

It was nearly good...
This audiobook got off to an promising start with interesting characters and theme and a cast of quality actors. Despite that I felt it didn't hang together as an audiobook.
