FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016
This was to be her last day alive. The renowned criminal psychologist Ira Samin prepared her suicide thoroughly. The death of her eldest daughter had weighed too heavily on her conscience for her to carry on and she yearned for one last drink to raise a toast to oblivion. Her morbid plans are interrupted and she is called in to negotiate a gruesome hostage situation at a radio station where a psychopath is playing a morbid game.
While the show is on air, he calls people from the phonebook at random. If they pick up the phone with a certain slogan, a hostage is set free. If they don't, then the hostage is unceremoniously shot. The man threatens to continue playing this game until his fiancée arrives at the studio. The only problem is that his fiancée died several months ago....
AMOK is a gripping audiodrama and tense psychological hostage thriller set in a Berlin Radio Station, from the internationally renowned author of the best-selling Audible Original Drama The Child.

The plot was reasonable, but the production was annoying, although professional. Everything was over-dramatised, with thumping music after seemingly every paragraph. The producer also enjoyed over-playing sound effects and telling all the actors to breathe very noisily, one of them in particular to squelchily sniff all the time and, for no reason at all, several of them to randomly and un-realistically cough in the middle of sentences. By the end, I was honestly wishing the heroine would die because I was so bored of her.
My perfect night in: Cup of tea, all my wonderful audible books and dramas and a comfortable seat on top of my bed. Nuf sed'
Like a movie
The all star cast of narrators was the reason I bought this, along with the fact Fitzek had previously published 'The Child', aother incredible audio drama that I thought could never be surpassed.
Listening to this really is like watching a movie play out in your head. I instantly took to the main character;Samim, I am a sucker for the leading lady/man who has a dark and unfortunate past that has lead them to the point of despair and suicide, but they keep hanging on to do some good for the world. In short, this was a great listen. The narration was superb and I challenge anyone to say they didn't enjoy it. Fittzek has done it again with another great storyline and audible have done it again bringing it to life: a magnificent duo.
Mr. Here and Now
Engaging, Emotional, Amazing
Yan May. The actor played this character VERY well.
Yes, but it was narrated a bit too much, and I got lost at the end
I have no idea?
This was very enjoyable, not as good as The Child or Locke and Key, but still very nice. I'm glad I chose not to quit at the start and kept listening. Really good! Just make sure you PAY attention, no multitasking!
Fairly low on the list, found the dramatization a distraction and needed lots of concentration to follow what was happening.
The story was average, with an abrupt ending plus found the dramatization a distraction and needed lots of concentration to follow what was happening. May have been better as an ordinary audio book
Radio Hell, who do you trust?
I really enjoyed this dramatization, although I felt it was a little over acted in parts, the story was well put together and I enjoyed the twists.
Excellent storyline, with good narration
Great book but it did get a little confusing at times for me but maybe that's just me!!
Kildonan by the sea
I did not pay for this drama, it was a gift from The Times, that is the most positive thing I can say about it.
The story is supposed to be a thriller, but it crosses rapidly into bad fantasy where magic is exchanged for the most outlandish coincidences and every twist becomes more unbelievable than the next, In an effort to support a plot that could only happen in a fantasist mind. The characters are at best cliches and parodies of humanity, at worst cheap titillations, that frankly are in bad taste and a bit of an insult. Examples a woman is left in a room to drive her mad and confess, her companion prisoner, suggests they take their clothes off to create and scape, she only thinks how much she likes his chest. A woman is promiscuous, this is a sign of her brain tumor.
The acting is OK but the soundscapes are not to modern standards, gun blasts are not realistic, binding sounds were a person pulling on scotch tape repeatedly, the music was not music.
I did listen to the entire story and I can not believe people think it entertaining.
"Gripping to the extreme!"
Nothing I have heard compares to this.
This is the first time.
All of it.
Warning! Do not start listening to this audio book unless you have 8 hours to spend ignoring all work, family and other commitments. This is the best thing I have heard from Audible in the 4 years or so I have been a customer hands down. The play structure and sound effects add to what is already a brilliant story. MORE English Sebastian Fitzek PLEASE!!! (or I may just have to learn German)
"An absolute fantastic listen."
I loved this book. Great action ,wonderful pace splindid narration enjoyed the music infusion,"brilliant. "AWESOME"
"Good story where you feel the emotion of the chara"
The story was well done and the actors did great. I enjoyed the story and really cared about the characters. The action seemed to get a little confusing at times but overall I really liked it. Good engaging story.
I enjoyed the story, but mostly the format! The acting and actor voice transition editing was very well done! I'm sure this was no small task, considering the large cast involved.
I gave the "Overall" and "Performance" ratings 5 stars, but the story only four, because, while the plot was good, I just did not "feel" for the characters... This may have been an editing issue. This audible was only 8 hours, so felt very abridged... There was not a lot of time for full character development, which was needed for this plot to make a solid impact on the listener. Unlike a visual movie where you can see the character's emotions, as well as hear them, with audio only you have to have more substance to make a connection.
Definitely worth the credit and I look forward to more Audible Original Productions.
"The production is brilliant!"
This book is performed like a movie, complete with background sound effects. It was brilliantly acted and so well done, it was as if you were watching a movie. The story was well-written and suspenseful, kept my attention throughout. I can't wait to see what other original releases Audible has planned!
"Great story, sizable cast"
After being pleasantly surprised by the quality of the audiobook of The Child, it was almost a no-brainer to get Amok since it features the same writer and production as The Child. I wasn't disappointed -- the story was great and the performances were top notch. Recommended.
"What is up with all the background noise?"
The story was okay. Not great. Not awful. Just okay. What really drags it down is the atrocious background sounds and the overly dramatized readings, complete with snotty sounds, coughing (what gives? was this even part of the script? Give the reader a lozenge!), the breathing, jeez the breathing, and finally to cap it off, the craptastic synthesized music at the end of every chapter that just won't stop.
"Torturous, melodramatic, neurotic and self absorbed."
Expected more after such a fine read of The Child. But, sadly, it disappoints. I'm also starting to feel that a single narrator is more effective than these full cast stagings. It strains credulity.
I love full production audio plays and was excited to see this. Even more so as I live in Berlin right now and it's always fun to hear stories from places you know. But OMG was this story horrible. The number of clichès, utterly unrealistic developments, factual nonsense and continuity errors in this book is mind boggling. Absolutely terrible.
My husband & I listened together on a road trip. Made the time go by very fast as it kept us entertained the whole way! Lots of twists & surprises - interesting characters - most of the narration was well done.
