Summary

Agatha Raisin's neighbouring village of Ancombe is usually the epitome of quiet rural charm, but the arrival of a new mineral water company - which intends to tap into the village spring - sends tempers flaring and divides the parish council into two stubborn camps. When Agatha, who happens to be the PR person for the water company, finds the council chairman murdered at the spring, tongues start wagging. Could one of the council members have silenced the chairman before he could cast the deciding vote?

It is up to Agatha, still nursing a bruised heart from her broken engagement, to investigate the councillors, solve the crime - and promote the water company in the face of all this scandal.

Only good thing is the reader!

Penelope Keith is the only thing about this book that makes it worth listening too.
The Raisin stories tend to follow the same format which becomes very boring if you listen/read more than one.
The vicar's wife is perhaps the only likeable person in these books.
The story isn't that brilliant, even allowing for the fact that it is 'cosy'.

The only mystery is how the author gets away with writing what is effectively the same book over and over again.

Least favourite of the series so far.

"The Wellspring of Death" is my least favourite book of the seven Agatha Raisin novels I have read so far. Agatha's obsession with James Lacey is, frankly, ridiculous, especially considering how badly the man treats her in this instalment - he's dismissive and condescending, yet possessive and jealous. Any charm or appeal James Lacey had in the earlier novels is long gone.
This book also felt very sad and depressing overall, even more so than "The Terrible Tourist." It seems Agatha lost some of her zest and vigour. (Then again, being involved with James Lacey does that to you, I guess.)
I will continue with the series since Penelope Keith's narration is pure joy and delight. I do hope, however, that the following novels reclaim the fun and cheerfulness of the opening books of the series.

Good as always....

Agatha Raisin is as always.... good. So is Penelope Keith reading the story. I cannot imagine anyone else doing the dialogue. Agatha reminds me at times of myself.

Highly enjoyable light listening

This is not my usual fare. I came across the first 4 novels in a compendium I bought by impulse in a sale. I read and thoroughly enjoyed them as a some holiday reading.

The audiobooks are well enough read by Penelope Keith. Some of the characterisations may be a bit lacking but the story telling is engaging.

As bed time listening they are recommended.

Fabulous

Another super installment in the life of Agatha Raisin with a couple of grizzly murders thrown in.

Read brilliantly by the magnificent Penelope Keith.

Overall very enjoyable

I do really enjoy this series and I like the character if Agatha a lot.

However there are two things that get repeated and I'm a bit bored of now. The relationship with James, he just seems more and more of a twit who doesn't appreciate her and hasn't grown as a character at all. And the constant thread of her feeling like she doesn't fit in, threatening to move back to London etc. I don't think either of these things need to be kept going, but after having read ahead in the synopsis of the other books at least one of them does, oh well.

great story average narrator

great story but the narrator made all the voices identical. it was hard to know who was speaking during dialogue as they all sounded the same. only different voice was the answering machine impersonation

Another easy listening tape.

Narration by Penelope Keith, as always, was brilliant. She IS Agatha Raisin as far as I am concerned. I did not find the story as good as others in London he collection.

Like a pair of comfy slippers

MC Beaton never disappoints. Her stories are always comforting and Agatha Raisin a comical and likeable lead. This book follows in the same vein as all the others, in that the murder often feels incidental to the rest of the plot line, with Agatha's personal life featuring front and centre. Read well, except for the odd dodgy accent (Mr Wong's Chinese accent is shoddy), the five or so hours fly past.
