Summary

Beautiful and brilliant, Kendra Donovan is a rising star at the FBI. Yet her path to professional success hits a speed bump during a disastrous raid where half her team is murdered, a mole in the FBI is uncovered, and she herself is severely wounded. As soon as she recovers, she goes rogue and travels to England to assassinate the man responsible for the deaths of her teammates.

While fleeing from an unexpected assassin herself, Kendra escapes into a stairwell that promises sanctuary but when she stumbles out again, she is in the same place - Aldrich Castle - but in a different time: 1815, to be exact.

Mistaken for a lady's maid hired to help with weekend guests, Kendra is forced to quickly adapt to the time period until she can figure out how she got there; and, more importantly, how to get back home. However, after the body of a young girl is found on the extensive grounds of the county estate, she starts to feel there's some purpose to her bizarre circumstances. Stripped of her 21st century tools, Kendra must use her wits alone in order to unmask a cunning madman.

Play the narration at x1.25 and it’s great!

I’ve had this narrator before and she is actually extremely good! The key is that you need to set the speed to x1.25 and she no longer sounds “drawn out” but you’ll then get to enjoy a great pace with lots of good character voices.

It is also incredibly worth the effort as the book is superb and very gripping! Great concept and addictive listening :-)

just cant get into this

The story so far is a bit disjointed and the narrator doesn't help, although she is brilliant at character voices it feels like she should be narrating a children's book or a period romance novel. shamefully I wont be finishing this book but i cant get behind the story or narration

Wrong narrator!

I can’t take this book seriously at all. It sounds all wrong - a story about the FBI, CIA etc narrated with a plummy English accent by someone who should really be relating a Jane Austen novel.

Great tip on 1.2 playing speed

Kept me engaged and never bored. I liked the main character, Kendra, although I thought the 1815 characters were more than averagely accepting of her modern speech oddities and manners, but it was a good story, not a history book, so I could let it go. So glad others suggested speeding up the narration - it was a big help and I thought narrator then did ok except for Scottish / Irish attempts, which were pretty painful, though fortunately characters were fairly minor. I would listen to another one, even with same narrator. If you like murder mysteries with a dash of thriller / history / romance, a solid 4 stars overall in my opinion.

Good story, pity about Lucy's voice

Great story. Ruined by LRs voice for the American parts, her poor appreciation of US intonation and her ability to do character voices so well it becomes obvious who the antagonist is way before the values lead up to them. She's good if it's an English, upper-class voice you're looking for.

The narrator killed it for me

I stuck with the storyline falling in and out of favour with the narrator, her male ‘voices’ were disappointing and probably not necessary. I wanted to give up on more than one occasion but carried on to the bitter end. The heroine was more than a bit flaky in parts than she should have been given she was supposed to be an FBI agent of super intelligence. Overall an ok listen but won’t be investing in this author again.

I would recommend

I liked the storyline although the narration was a bit dragging. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys drama, thrill and romance. Also, for those who don’t mind swearing and detailed descriptions of injuries.

Different

This book had amazing detail and dialogue. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully the author has written other books.

interesting entertaining story

an interesting, inventive and entertaining story. I like odd time travel tales and this is a good one. the characters are strong and well described. Kendra the FBI agent out of her time works quite well although her acceptance by the aristocratic characters is a little too easy. I liked this one and an interesting in following the story in future books. narration is excellent but at times is a bit light for the subject matter however it was easy to listen to with a decent range.
