Summary

A half-starved young Russian man is smuggled into Hamburg at dead of night. He has an improbable amount of cash secreted in a purse around his neck. He is a devout Muslim. Or is he? He says his name is Issa....

Annabel, an idealistic young German civil-rights lawyer, determines to save Issa from deportation. In pursuit of his mysterious past, she confronts the incongruous Tommy Brue, the 60-year-old scion of Brue Frères, a failing British bank based in Hamburg.

Annabel, Issa, and Brue form an unlikely alliance and a triangle of impossible loves is born. Meanwhile, scenting a sure kill in the ‘War on Terror’, the rival spies of Germany, England, and America converge upon the innocents.

Another classic from John Le Carre.

Beautifully written and it keeps you going right to the end. The subject while being set in Germany with the MI6 and CIA being involved with the native intelligence agencies, the ending will ring true with many people concerned about oversight and rendition

Slow to get in to

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I struggled a little to maintain interest, which is unusual as I generally enjoy Le Carre's books. I found my attention drifting and had to keep rewinding to follow the story.

Would you be willing to try another book from John le Carré? Why or why not?

Absolutely. He's one of the top thriller writers of a generation and I've been reading his books since the 1960s. His writing remains relevant and compelling.

What about Michael Jayston’s performance did you like?

He has a laconic, laid back delivery. Great timbre to his voice.

Did A Most Wanted Man inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

Stick with it, it does get better as the convoluted tale of treachery and double dealing develops.

What happend? they made this into a film

Would you try another book written by John le Carré or narrated by Michael Jayston?

I have either read or listened to almost every Le Carrier book and this is by far the worst.

What could John le Carré have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Write about what he knows and not get on the anti-terrorist band wagon

Not his best work.

As a fan of the Author ot pains me to say this was a bit of a struggle to get through. The characters were unpleasant and implausible. The plot was almost non-existent and the story just dragged. Compared to other Le Carre novels this is a weak effort. Very disappointing.

Disappointing

Would you try another book written by John le Carré or narrated by Michael Jayston?

I have listed to other le Carre stories before and enjoyed the sense of action, of things happening, a sense of danger. I would be tempted to listed to others relating the cold war.

What was most disappointing about John le Carré’s story?

This story just lacked any sense of immediacy. It just plodded and some of the things that happened felt like they were just put in to make sure that something had happened. Generally disappointing as a story. At the end I felt glad it was over and that's something that you shouldn't be thinking if the story is good.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Michael Jayston?

Michael Jayston is an excellent narrator. His characterizations are very good and add to the overall enjoyment of any story he reads.

Any additional comments?

Just very disappointed. This one might be going back.

a believable story

This is the kind of situation that could happen at the present time. The characters arouse feelings of empathy and fear, as in a drama , inevitably with a tragic ending.

Darker than a black dog on a moonless night

Excellent story, descriptions and characters as always from Le Carre, and excellent narration.

Le Carre is frequently dark in subject matter, but this is particularly dark. You have been warned.
