Summary

The new Sir Geoffrey Mappestone mystery.

When the former crusader knight Geoffrey Mappestone is ordered by King Henry to deliver a series of mysterious letters to the restless western reaches of Wales, he agrees only reluctantly.

His conviction that the simple mission hides something more sinister is strengthened when the letters’ scribe is murdered before the journey begins.

Then one of Geoffrey’s travelling companions is killed, and he knows he must uncover the secret behind the letters before more victims are claimed...

good story and an enjoyable listen!

I've really enjoyed listening to the latest 3 books in this series, shame the first five weren't available. The details are historically accurate and the characters well developed.
The narrator is a skilled story teller whose accents and characterisation is excellent - in fact one of the best I've heard in a long time!

very enjoyable narrator

I found the plot quite complicated (in a good way) and there were plenty of characters and potential villains. I particularly enjoyed the narrators style of delivery, accents and humour.

Wonderful way to lose yourself in the 12th century

One of my favourite things about this series of books is the epilogue. The author gives us brief historical overview, the characters that were based on real people, their story and the places the story took place. My only real problem is the first few books are missing from audible. You wouldn’t pick up a book and start reading it half way through. Yet that is what audible done with this series of books that all follow. It is well worth reading and I would truly recommend reading all of the available books in order. You can really enjoy this collection of books without having to think too hard on the mystery.

Rambling

Very slow to get going: that chapter where Geoffrey is trying to find out what is in the letters was way too protracted. I like historical whodunnits but not this one.

intrigue and suspense

This, although fun taken with historical facts used to fit in with the plot was fun, and I enjoyed the faux camaderie between characters. Good fun.
