Summary

What if you could go back in time and change the course of history? What if the watershed moment you could change was the JFK assassination? 11.22.63, the date that Kennedy was shot - unless....

King takes his protagonist Jake Epping, a high school English teacher from Lisbon Falls, Maine, 2011, on a fascinating journey back to 1958 - from a world of mobile phones and iPods to a new world of Elvis and JFK, of Plymouth Fury cars and Lindy Hopping, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake's life - a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

With extraordinary imaginative power, King weaves the social, political and popular culture of his baby-boom American generation into a devastating exercise in escalating suspense.

Critic reviews

“This new epic from Stephen King rates among the best he’s written – no small praise for the man who wrote Carrie, It, The Stand and Under the Dome.” ( Trucking News)

For me thankfully not a horror story.

This is genuinely good and surprisingly touching in places. The Of Mice and Men bit had me tearing up.

Amazing

What an amazing listen! Gripped at every turn and didn’t want it too end. By far my favourite Stephen King novel

Gripping and incredibly rich in detail.

Historically interesting, wonderful characterisation, and incredibly gripping. Occasionally difficult to listen to (the Dunning family episode and the situation in which Jake finds the world in later on, to name a couple). Craig Wasson is an amazingly talented narrator, he makes you imagine each individual in great detail. I listened to the first 8 chapters and then struggled to find the time to continue, but when I did I became obsessed and listened at every available opportunity. I'm sad I have finished it now but it has reignited my school-time interest in JFK and encouraged me to continue learning more about those characters I knew little about. Definitely recommended!

Beautiful.

It says a lot that this is the audiobook I keep coming back to despite having a number in my library that I haven't even started. The writing is King on top form (although not in the way that horror fans will think), and Craig Wasson's performance truly brings the story to life.

The story is just beautiful - however you want to take this book in, just make sure you do. You will not regret the time taken to read or listen to it.

A real page turner!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

King makes the event so believable! We've all wondered what happened in that school book depository. A real slow build then a roller coaster of a book. 5 star performance.

What other book might you compare 11.22.63 to, and why?

Time after time. The hunt to stop Jack the Ripper parallels Oswald.

What does Craig Wasson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Real emotion in his voice

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the heroine was left facially scarred

Any additional comments?

I would recommend this book to anyone on a long journey. The hours fly by listening.

Loved every minute of it!

I felt it didn't read like a Stephen King book but that didn't hinder it in any way. I could easily listen to it again right now

If Stephen King Wrote Back To The Future...

🧡 When I think Stephen King, I think horror (Pet Sematary, IT, The Shining) or epic sci fi (The Stand, Under the Dome). This has elements of both, but it is also an incredibly detailed alternative history that imagines and reimagines the assassination of John F Kennedy. It’s a history deep dive and a thriller and a love story. It’s Stephen King, but not as I have ever known him.

💚 I was immediately hooked by the creepy undertones and likeable main character, English teacher Jake Epping. The tension began to build almost immediately and just kept ratcheting upwards. In fact, I’d call this one of the most suspenseful books I’ve ever heard. Like many of King’s works, it is longer than it should be and prone to rambling, but is still a masterpiece.

💜 Like the much lighter Back to the Future, there is the question of the impact of changing the past. But this is a far grimier, darker viewpoint.

💛 Warning for some very difficult subject matter, particularly domestic abuse.

SOUNDBITE

🎧 Anyone who’s listened to a Stephen King audiobook is familiar with Craig Wasson’s gruff, amiable voice. He is undoubtedly a brilliant narrator. He’s expressive and likeable and portrays a variety of characters brilliantly. Which is good as he’s there for the full 30-hour plus stint. I do think his voice is a bit too deep to portray female characters over such a long period.
