Publisher's Summary

Stephen Mangan (Green Wing, Free Agents), Alistair McGowan (Alistair McGowan's Big Impression) and Sophie Winkleman (Peep Show, Red Dwarf) star in this fantastical new BBC Radio 4 surreal science-fiction comedy by Richard Pinto (The Armstrong & Miller Show) and Anil Gupta (The Office).

Stephen stars as fantasy novelist Sam, who is whisked off to a Tolkien-style parallel universe by a noble elf, a sexy warrior princess, and a feisty dwarf called Dean. It seems that Sam's dog is 'The Chosen One' destined to save 'Lower Earth' from the evil Lord Darkness (Alistair McGowan).

For fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Lord of the Rings, this is an epic story of adventure, kinship, romance - and dog biscuits. ElvenQuest also stars Darren Boyd (Saxondale, Smack the Pony) as Vidar the Elf Lord; Kevin Eldon (Hyperdrive, Big Train) as Dean the Dwarf; and Dave Lamb (Moving Wallpaper) as Amis, 'The Chosen One'.

This is the complete six-part BBC Radio 4 series.

    "great humor"

You need to listen to the first episode to know who everyone is (and why they are what they are), and then it's great - the dark lord and his sidekick reminds me of Time Bandits! Fantastically funny (and the 2nd series on the radio at the moment is just as good). You have to get this!

I listen rather than read on train journeys as I can't stand being jostled by other travelers, and walking & listening is so easy

"I wish I knew about this when it was on the radio!"

I haven't laughed as hard for AGES as I did while listening to this - not only is the script incredibly well written, but the performances are brilliant, and the actors who are doing the voice work are all great

The concept is amusing in itself, but add in the comedy stars who acted this and you have comedy GOLD! One of the best things is having Sophie Winkleman playing the Elven princess, because imagining her in the role will make any red blooded man smile

I'm buying the second and third series as soon as I can to continue listening to the adventures, and hope that they're as brilliant as the first one is, or even hope that they're better - I will certainly look forward to the work of these writers on any radio broadcasts or audio books I find

Giving this anything less than 5 stars would be impossible for me as this was the funniest listen I've had in AGES - long live ElvenQuest!

"Fantasy comedy that will make you laugh"

I picked it up as a light listen while commuting and ended up listening to it every time I want to cheer up.

It is a great piece after a hard day that will put a smile on your face.

It's the only radio series I've downloaded that has made me laugh and has kept me interested. There is some great acting, but I will give special mention to Alistair McGowan for a very clever performance as Lord Darkness. The characters work very well together, and the story is fun.

    "Highly amusing"

A tongue-in-cheek parody of a classic fantasy adventure, Elvenquest is very funny and an enjoyable experience.
The cast are well chosen and the situations funny.

I hadn't heard of this before I bought it but I'm glad I gave it a go.

My only issue with this series that now I've listened to it I'm going to have to go buy the rest to listen to.

    "Very enjoyable fantasy comedy...."

Have had this on the wishlist for a while, I thought it was about time I got around to spending the credits.

ElvenQuest is a very enjoyable, easy-listen with a great cast and a reasonable story.

It's a BBC show so the quality of the production is extremely high with slick sound effects and atmospheric music.

The story setup is very nice and I won't spoil it for you and once things really start to get moving then episodes link together nicely enveloped in a thin series-arc.

Stephen Mangan leads the cast as Sam and gives a performance not unlike his BBC Dirk Gently.

The supporting cast work very well together and with a few guest voices thrown into the odd episode, it is very pleasant listening. The three-way between Sam, Vidar the Elf Lord and Penthiselea the Warrior Princess is a series long strand-gag that is very enjoyable.

A special mention must be made for Alistair McGowan as the Lord of Evil who is probably related to Andy Hamilton's Satan in Old Harry's Game (also available from Audible).

This is the first series of four though as of writing (September 2013), Audible hasn't added series 4 to the library.

Not a classic but much to enjoy and well worth a listen.

    "Elvenquest"
If you could sum up Elvenquest in three words, what would they be?

    Brilliant, irreverent, hilarious.

What other book might you compare Elvenquest to and why?

I'd compare Elvenquest to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Whereas Hitchhiker's is a farcical take on the world of science fiction, Elvenquest is a farcical take on the fantasy genre.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

All performances are terrific, but I am now a particular fan of Steven Mangan.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

So many moments made me laugh out loud that I had to stop listening in public places.

    Any additional comments?

Initially bought this for my daughter who had loved the Hitchhiker's Guide BBC audiobooks and was looking for something similar to move on to. This series more than lived up to expectations and the whole family are now avid listeners. Keeps us all giggling on those long, dull journeys.
