A BBC Radio 4 satirical comedy series about a seasoned presenter of travel documentaries, Brian Gulliver, who finds himself in a hospital's secure unit after claiming to have experienced a succession of bizarre adventures. Originally broadcast 21 February 2011 - 28 March 2011.
Brian Gulliver's Travels is a new adventure story from Bill Dare (producer of Spitting Image, Dead Ringers and I've Never Seen Star Wars). The series has attracted an excellent cast led by Neil Pearson (Drop the Dead Donkey, Bridget Jones's Diary) and award winning star Mariah Gale (Ophelia in BBC TV's 2009 production of Hamlet). We hear about Brian's travels in Gelbetia, a country run by doctors; Juradia, where every other person is a lawyer; Osminia, a land where marriage is outlawed; Sham, a country where alternative therapies abound; Erosia, which has a very different view of sexual politics; and Jampoa, where fame definitely equals fortune.
In addition to Neil Pearson and Mariah Gale, the cast also includes Tamsin Greig, John Standing, Paul Bhattacharjee, Christopher Douglas, Catherine Shepherd, Vicky Pepperdine, Phil Cornwell, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Jo Bobin and Katherine Jakeways.

I'd heard parts of this on Radio 4 and really enjoyed it so decided to buy it. It's really entertaining and quite thought provoking. I will be getting the next series.
This is a wonderful, imaginative modern freak-show of an adventure where our world and our values are distorted through a satirical hall of mirrors. Brian Gulliver goes to hilarious, bizarre places where everything is upside down, inside out and back to front - a land where man-babies are farmed for food, a “medocracy” where incompetence is a medical syndrome. Try as hard as you like you’ll never imagine the surprises and shocks that run through it. Travel writer Brian Gulliver - “two books and a bit of telly” - is benignly bonkers, a philosopher who says the unsayable and does the undoable. It can enjoyed just for the comedy, but if you ask yourself the serious questions that the book invites, you’ll think twice before you eat that crispy belly pork again.
A well thought out and very original BBC comedy, that spans philosophy and humour. Neil Pearson does an excellent job. I just hope series 2 comes out on audible.
"Excellent dramatisation. Very funny"
Great dramatization. Great characters and lots of laughs.
Very much so. Once my headphones were in, I had to listen to the end! Great way of getting housework done painlessly!
"Light hearted and fun to read."
This light hearted comedy follows the travels of Brian Gulliver into marvelous and very fictional lands. Each of these lands represents the logical extreme of many of modern ideas including a land run by doctors, a land run by back to earth people, a land of just 1 law and many other fantastical scenarios. The stories are well told and very funny. If you are a fan of BBC humor, you will very likely enjoy this series. I am personally hopeful that there will be a series 2.
