Penguin Classics presents Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters, adapted for audio and available as a digital download as part of the Penguin English Library series. Read by Penelope Wilton.
"Eh, miss, but that is a rare young lady! She does have such pretty coaxing ways...."
Seventeen-year-old Molly Gibson worships her widowed father. But when he decides to remarry, Molly's life is thrown off course by the arrival of her vain, shallow, and selfish stepmother. There is some solace in the shape of her new stepsister, Cynthia, who is beautiful, sophisticated and irresistible to every man she meets. Soon the girls become close, and Molly finds herself cajoled into becoming a go-between in Cynthia's love affairs. But in doing so, Molly risks ruining her reputation in the gossiping village of Hollingford - and jeopardizing everything with the man she is secretly in love with.

It's a pity that this is only an abridged version, but I chose it as I really didn't like the other readers from the samples. It's another great novel from Elizabeth Gaskell read delightfully by Penelope Wilton.
"Highly Recommended if You're a Child at Heart"
It reads as a beautiful and complex fairy tale. There are quite a few people in the novel, so I had to work a bit to keep them all straight. The main characters are thoroughly developed; and, like most of us, are good people who sometimes make the wrong choices. This is part of the beauty of the story; we get to watch them change from life experience and (for some) their growing development. In all, Wives and Daughters is a wonderful fairy tale written in a way that creates an enjoyable page-turning love story that speaks to ones heart, regardless of your chronological age.
I must add that Penelope Wilton did a wonder job at narrating this story. Her voice and the gentleness of her tone were perfect for this novel. I will be looking for other books she has narrated.
