Summary

Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, June 16th 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

While Bloom's passionate wife, Molly, conducts yet another illicit liasion (with her concert manager), Bloom finds himself getting into arguments with drunken nationalists and wild carousing with excitable medical students, before rescuing Stephen Dedalus from a brawl and returning with him to his own basement kitchen.

In the hands of Jim Norton and Marcella Riordan, experienced and stimulating Joycean readers, and carefully directed by Roger Marsh, Ulysses becomes accessible as never before. It is entertaining, immediate, funny, and rich in classical, philosophical, and musical allusion.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Finalist, Classics, 2005

"As ambitious and rewarding an audio production as any that exists, an audio experience that truly deserves to be cherished....Readers of Ulysses have long been encouraged to read out loud the more difficult sections for added comprehension and enjoyment of the language. Now, thanks to Naxos, the entire book is available in a performance to savor. It is safe to say that anyone wanting to experience the preeminent work of modern fiction has in this package the perfect audio companion." (AudioFile)

A Masterpiece

Brilliant performance which captured the music and vivid world. I wouldn't have finished it without the audiobook, it made a challenging text much more accessible.

Pure Guiness

One of the hardest books I have ever read. Immensely rewarding and enriching. Originally bought as an audiobook, but within a few minutes of listening I realised much of it was going over my head so I downloaded the Project Gutenberg text version to read alongside. Even then I had to make frequent reference to the Shmoop online student summary and analysis (credit where it's due; it's excellent). A couple of chapters in particular left me in awe. You get the sense that Joyce really was a literary genius. It's a testament to how good this book is, and how much still remains for me to find within it, that were someone to ask me to start reading it again from the beginning right now, I'd be completely ok with it. When I think about the idea of rereading, say, The Bourne Identity and how tedious I would find that, the gulf separating great literature with merely good storytelling is is made apparent. I should finally add that the narration of this novel was absolutely impeccable by both narrators. I could listen to these voices all day long.

Accessible Ulysses

Havinf tried unsuccessfully to read Ulysses in the past, i decided to give the audio book a try, and it paid off. The reading and performance are truly exceptional throughout, and make a complex work truly enjoyable. The readers understand every nuance and intention and present clearly, humerously and with passion. i highly recommend this production.

not sure I'll finish this...

I know the story is not supposed to be easy reading, which is my reason to choose the audiobook. However, I am rather disappointed as the main narration is far too low and the shouty characters far louder than everyone and everything else.
The narrator is good and has a pleasant voice, but must Mulligan really be read that loudly? it makes following the story harder, as both Steven 's voice is lower and the narration just as low.
I'm so annoyed I'm not sure I'll finish

Not the Easiest Read

Found it a challenging read but glad I've read it. Narration best ever listened to.

Really brought the story to life

In the past I have failed miserably to read Ulysses, so I loved how this rendition transformed my appreciation. The poetry, the musicality of the text, the different prose styles and the characters were handled brilliantly by both narrators. Ulysses triumphs in audio form, and is much more engaging and easier to understand than in print. A magnificent performance!

Stunningly performed

A beautiful book but also a stunning performance by Jim Norton. Mesmerising. Intellectual but poetic.

one of my favourite reading experiences ever

i loved this version of Ulysses, having previously read the book in print form. Hearing it read so beautifully has, to my mind, added new layers of meaning and sensations, and made it even more real. i often found myself walking around the same part of Dublin as was being described. i will return to this audio version again and again.

Perfect narration

Of course, Joyce’s stories and words speak for themselves, yet, Jim Norton manages to heighten the experience further; his singing seamlessly weaved into the poetic and rhythmic narration is a testament to his understanding completely Joyce’s writing. A beautiful voice switching between characters, man and animal, as if reincarnating, dying and reincarnating again. Pitch perfect.
