Summary
While Bloom's passionate wife, Molly, conducts yet another illicit liasion (with her concert manager), Bloom finds himself getting into arguments with drunken nationalists and wild carousing with excitable medical students, before rescuing Stephen Dedalus from a brawl and returning with him to his own basement kitchen.
In the hands of Jim Norton and Marcella Riordan, experienced and stimulating Joycean readers, and carefully directed by Roger Marsh, Ulysses becomes accessible as never before. It is entertaining, immediate, funny, and rich in classical, philosophical, and musical allusion.
Critic reviews
- Audie Award Finalist, Classics, 2005
"As ambitious and rewarding an audio production as any that exists, an audio experience that truly deserves to be cherished....Readers of Ulysses have long been encouraged to read out loud the more difficult sections for added comprehension and enjoyment of the language. Now, thanks to Naxos, the entire book is available in a performance to savor. It is safe to say that anyone wanting to experience the preeminent work of modern fiction has in this package the perfect audio companion." (AudioFile)

Ulysses Read
I had always thought that this book would be impossible to read but as with other difficult works listening made it much easier to take in. It was enjoyable and amusing and sexually explicit and gave a picture of Dublin life at the time giving Joyce’s views on the ruling English whom he poked fun at and the Jews with whom he had some sympathy I think. The male characters were read very well and clearly defined but I heard little or nothing of the last 2 chapter even with the volume turned up fully. The female voice was spoken in a whisper which was disappointing. Will have to read again to get the full impact of Joyce’s work. Might now try War and Peace which has proved impossible to read but like Ulysses might turn out to be listenable

Unread classics
I have had this hardback on my shelf for 70 years but never got beyond chapter one. Jim Norton ‘s brilliant narration brought it vividly to life, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Excellent performance
I mostly enjoyed this novel however it is excessive in every measurement. Clearly Joyce is a very talented and well read writer but also makes every effort to ensure that we all know that he believes this. What was the point of Ulysses other than as an act of shameless self promotion, the book was written for an audience of one. The self assured hubris of the author is off the scale and evident in every sentence. His efforts to constantly shock his audience is also tiresome as it’s very contrived and you would imagine that his intent was to get this book banned in his home country for the notoriety

I don’t find Joyce as interesting as he finds himself
Long, self indulgent and hard to follow. Some good bits. Can’t imagine recommending it to anyone. I listened to a lecture series alongside and that helped make since if it.

Great performance by both readers.
Finally listened to the entire book. What an incredible masterpiece and hearing it enhances it so much. Loved it. Wonderfully performed by both readers, all the way through and Molly’s soliloquy was outstanding.

Perfect rendering of a towering masterpiece
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This reading opened this wonderful, wonderful book to me. I, Seán Holden, have started what's always been called a hard read several times. Jim Norton has led me effortlessly through Bloom's journey. The depth of Joyce's understanding of language, mind and body is as profound as Shakespeare's and as beautiful. And he is funny and and he is learned. Having done the 27 hours I'm going to start all over again. Jim Norton's own understanding of the narrative and the distinctive presentation of the vast swirl of characters is perfection. It sounds just as I imagine it swooshing out of Joyce's head. The last chapter, read by Marcella Riordan, is a joy of pure eroticism with her enticingly beautiful voice taking us intimately inside Molly in every way. This is the best audio book performance I have ever heard. It gives us with ease the book we should all have.

A book for grown-up people
Jim Norton's performance is the greatest triumph of reading-aloud that I ever expect to hear.
Looking at some of the earlier negative reviews, I feel like inviting these people to grow up a little. It is the rhetoric of the playground to dismiss something as rubbish merely because you yourself do not appreciate it.

(To me) this is not a book to be listened to
Sadly, I've given up listening to this book after a bit more than an hour.
I'm used to listen while commuting (train, tram, metro, bus, you name it) and therefore, my concentration isn't always up to par. Now, in any other book I've listened to, this isn't much of a problem. You can skip a minute or two and still fall on you feet as soon as you're "out time" is over. it has worked very well so far, be it with novels or even 'serious' historical books.
Not so with Ulysses! When something like this happens with this book, you come back and the characters seem to be talking utter nonsense! Is this a new chapter? Did you miss a change in subject?
I'll *read* the book...
(By the way, my rating doesn't reflect any judgement in the quality of the audio-book itself.)

Really hard work!
I know this is a revered work but it is mighty hard work in stretches though are some real gems tucked in the text. Listening helps get into the stream of consciousness passages. Beautifully read though with a tendency to alternate whisper and shout in some parts which is waring

The way to experience Ulsysses
What did you like most about Ulysses?
The huge variety in the chapters and the fierce intelligence made it a challenging listen, but also a very worthwhile effort. I listened to this along with a Great Courses audio book about Ulysses, and that made me understand at least more of it than I would else have done.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Leopold Bloom. He is both the character we get to know best, and a very humane and fully rounded character.
Which character – as performed by Jim Norton – was your favourite?
Leopold Bloom.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I wouldn't make a film of it!
Any additional comments?
The reading of the book was overall astonishing from both actors, and the choice of music at the beginning of the chapters was very fitting.I had a physical book as well, which I occasional used to check something, but that was just an added bonus, not a necessity.
