Late one moonlit night, Walter Hartright encounters a solitary and terrified woman dressed all in white. He saves her from capture by her pursuers and determines to solve the mystery of her distress and terror.
Inspired by an actual criminal case, this gripping tale of murder, intrigue, madness and mistaken identity has never been out of print since its publication and brought Collins great fame and success. Considered to be among the first mystery novels and the first and finest in the genre of 'sensation novels', The Woman in White is noted for its suspenseful plot and unique characterisation.
Collins's use of multiple narrators drew on his legal training and he states 'the story of an offence against the laws is told in Court by more than one witness'.
In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer ranked The Woman in White number 23 in the top 100 greatest novels of all time. The novel was also listed at number 77 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.
Charles Dickens was a close friend and mentor of Collins, and the two collaborated together on drama and fiction. The Woman in White, as well as some of his other work, was first published in Dickens' journals.
Narrator Biography
Sir Ian Holm, is a star of the Royal Shakespeare Company, who has played more than 100 roles in films and on television, whilst receiving a stream of awards and nominations. His television debut came as Richard III on the BBC's filmed theatrical production The Wars of the Roses (1965). One of his best-known roles is Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire (1981). He has also starred in The Fifth Element (1997), From Hell (2001), The Aviator (2004) and as Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. He has provided voice-overs for many television documentaries including 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth (2009), starred in the BBC's The Lord of the Rings radio dramatisations and narrated many audiobooks. In 1989 he was appointed CBE and in 1998 was knighted for his services to drama.

A wonderful discovery
I picked this up as I have an interest in Victorian fiction and I love Sherlock Holmes. I was only curious So I had no expectations really. However this book revealed itself to be an extraordinary, beautiful, deep and riveting tale. By the middle of the book it had elevated self to be my second favourite book of all time. My favourite being Lord of the rings and my third favourite being Watership Down. To all who see this I urge you to read the woman in white and disappear into a captivating bubble of mystery and intrigue and romance!

I hate period dramas but loved this book
It takes a while to get going but an interesting and rewarding listen. Great value for the £2.99 I paid on a daily audible deal.

If you love the Classics this book is a must!
Draws you in from the onset! The mystery carries on until the very end.
Ian Holm is a superb narrator, he brings the Characters to life. The book is so well read that you can't wait for the next piece of the puzzle. It is a long book but well worth the listen.

brilliantly narrated period drama
it is hard to believe this book was written in 1859 - other than the language which is 19th century the story could be modeen day. Ian Holm's narration can only be described as perfect, his tone, and pitch were so atmospheric you got to know each of the characters. i loved this book.😘

Excellent book/performance poor playback/Audible
Characters were well developed, unique and multi faceted. Pure joy to know and understand. The story was nearly predictable at times, but there were definite twists I didn't see coming!
The performance of the actor was excellent, however, the playback of this book on Audible was extremely poor & frustrating as it kept stopping. I've enjoyed many other books on Audible with zero issues so I fear it is this particular book. I did delete and reinstall, same problems existed. but I persevered and I'm glad I did as the ending was a relief (in a very good way!)

Best audio book I have listened to so far
Would you consider the audio edition of The Woman in White to be better than the print version?
Yes, I loved listening to it and couldn't put it down. I have read this book before, but listening to it with this narrator, was something else.
What other book might you compare The Woman in White to, and why?
I think it stands out above the rest due to the way the individual characters tell their part of the story. It is at heart a love story and detective story - Pride and Prejudice v Sherlock Holmes?
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Some of the imagery describing Count Fosco and his animals, but really the story draws you on so it flows together.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Just a feeling of suspense until I got to the end ............. which is strange as I have read it before.
Any additional comments?
The characters are well drawn and portrayed. The story beautifully structured, and it is without doubt the best audio book I have listened to so far.
