Publisher's Summary

It should have been a lovely English country-house weekend. But the unfortunate guest list is enough to exasperate a saint, and the host, Sir Arthur Billington-Smith, is an abusive wretch hated by everyone - from his disinherited son to his wife's stoic would-be lover. When Sir Arthur is found stabbed to death, no one is particularly grieved and no one has an alibi. The unhappy guests find themselves under the scrutiny of Scotland Yard's cool-headed Inspector Harding, who has solved tough cases before - but this time, the talented young inspector discovers much more than he's bargained for.

    "Good story ruined"

Another very good story by this author, ruined by the narrator. Does no one check the reading and pronunciation of these books before they are put on sale. Audible apparently do not care that their customers are driven mad by poor performances or they would do something about it.
This would be a brilliant audio book read by someone else.

    "good story well done"
What did you like most about The Unfinished Clue?

    the house party whodunit setting

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dinah - so feisty a very "Modern Girl" in an old fashioned setting

What about Ulli Birvé’s performance did you like?

Unlike Death in the Stocks which I disliked Ulli really gets to grips with this one and it flowed along nicely - most enjoyable

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

no particular "moment" I just enjoyed the way the story came together

    Any additional comments?

    No

    Story
"Stayed up late to finish it!"

If you like the "oldies" (Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Patricia Wentworth, etc) then this book will be a joy. It has all the standard form of a stately home gathering, where the murder is discreetly committed (reader not subjected to too much blood and gore), the group of relatives and friends forced to remain together until the denouement where the killer is finally revealed by the Scotland Yard detective, etc. True classic British country home mystery, that does not disappoint.

At first I thought there were too many characters to sort out, but Heyerdahl handles them so well, they are each quite memorable by the end of the book. This is about the death of Arthur Billington-Smith, a perfectly horrible and cruel man that everybody was secretly or openly happy to see dead. Which made deciding whom, among them all, hated him just enough more to find him threatening at a different level. Enter Scotland Yard, and even a bit of romance.

The narration is good, the story was a great cerebral puzzle, a Who-dunnit in the truest sense, and I enjoyed listening to every minute of it.

"A good listen to a comfortable story"

This is an old-fashioned whodunit. The characters are as known to the listener as one's own parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable listen. Expertly narrated with quite well defined voices for each character. Perfect to recommend to your aging parents or grandparents. No sex, bad words, or other distasteful things.

A great book for the Agatha Christie fans who want to read something else. Old English manners. A lovely book though it does have some slow bits. I enjoyed my first dive into Georgette Heyer.

    "Awful, stilted narration"

The Unfinished Clue is a contemporary (1930's) mystery from the Grand Dame of Regencies, Georgette Heyer. Her Regencies are witty, humourous, well-researched, and absolutely delightful. Her mysteries, OTOH, are still well written, but just not quite as enjoyable. In this mystery, we have few characters we like, and it takes far too long to get to the actual murder. But all that would be not an issue if we could enjoy the process of getting there. But the narration is simply awful. The characters are read reasonably well, but the pacing is beyond slow and measured to positively stilted. I won't be buying any more books with this narrator. Ever.

    "Great story, great narration"

Mystery was easy to suss out but pleasant all the same. Amusing dialogue and great personalities. And I disagree with other reviewers -- I loved Ulli Birve! She has a wonderful sense of characterization.
