Publisher's Summary

The Ramayana is one of the best-known epics in the world. It is the tale of Rama, the Prince of Ayodhya, who exiles himself to the forest for 14 years to honor his father's Word.

In the forest, Rama, his wife, Sita, and his brother, Lakshmana, meet new friends and unusual foes, and each day brings new adventures. But Ravana of Lanka, the King of Demons, ruins it all by abducting Sita. To rescue her, Rama enlists the help of Hanuman and his monkey army.

"Thoroughly enjoyed the telling of this story"

I'm fascinated by the ancient classics and found myself strangely addicted to this one as I listened. It is beautifully narrated, quite gripping in places with the odd unexpected twist. I particularly enjoy the moral undertones and insights into ancient views of God and evil and how it is depicted.

    "Enchanting!"

I was transported back to my childhood. It was like a combination of bedtime stories - the monsters of Grimm's fairy tales, kings, queens, princesses and princes - gods like those of Olympus - monkey armies like The Wizard of Oz...all at the same time! Artfully read with various voices and inflections. It truly was enchanting!

    "Well performed, well written."

This audiobook is performed well, by a man who knows how to pronounce everything. The text is brought to life in a fun and novel way.

Not bad overall. Reader changed voices between characters which get annoying after a while. There are better versions of this book out there albeit not on audio.

"Pretty OK on all dimensions, do recommend"
Would you listen to The Ramayana again? Why?

Yeah, I might. It's targeted towards children, and I think it does a good job of it. The narrator did a pretty good job, it's clear he tried very hard. Sometimes, he might have tried a little too hard (faking a female voice with falsetto is generally a bad idea), but I'm happy to forgive those shortcomings. Yes, I would listen to it again.

What other book might you compare The Ramayana to and why?

I suppose it would be comparable to "Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths," by Bernard Evslin, in both tone and intent.

Which character – as performed by Samrat Chakrabarti – was your favorite?

His rendition of the male characters are pretty good.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This is a funny question, I'm not sure why I'm being asked this.

    Any additional comments?

In summary, although some aspects of it were a bit annoying, they didn't take anything away from the underlying experience. It is an important piece of our human heritage, and told well for a modern audience. I would recommend it.

    "Superb Story and Narration!"

While the cover suggests the story is most appropriate for children, the dynamic and animated style will keep any listener glued to the end! The narration and many voices really make the story come alive. Genuinely superb.

    "We enjoyed it"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The narration is very impressive except for Sita's voice which was disappointing. Ram's voice was the best. The story line is impressive and description of forest is awesome. my 10 year old son also loved it. We have not finished the book yet
We are 50% done though and looking forward to completing it

What other book might you compare The Ramayana to and why?

by Ramesh Menon. We wish for an audible version of that book soon

What about Samrat Chakrabarti’s performance did you like?

Yes except when he tried the voice of a female. That was a huge disappointment.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

description of the beauty of the forest

    Any additional comments?

the voice of sita should have ben gentle and good.

    "Overall, quite enjoyable!"

I enjoyed listening to the story. The characterization is good, and the narration is excellent. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed in the ending, however.
