Summary
In the cosmopolitan Paris of the 1880s, the new proprietors of the Opera House are amused to discover that their costly acquisition is said to be haunted. But their smiles quickly vanish as tragedy follows misfortune: a murdered stagehand, a fatal accident, a missing girl.

Great telling of the Phantom story
Really well told story adding lots of scenes and information to the theatre production. Narration and voices are all superb and bring the characters to life. So well done, highly recommended listen even if you have seen the theatre or film versions.

Quiet
Hi there,
Even though I live with my hubby who is also my carer, because we have been married now for over thirty five years we have ran right out of chit chatting, not only do I sit and do my hobbies while listening to my audible books , (it a shame we cannot retire from every housework plus gardening etc.,) but anyway while doing these chores I also listen to my audio books, even while going in and out of all my rooms I can still just about hear my audio book going but not clearly, but it makes me feel happier and safer it’s like having another person or people depending if its on tv or radio audio book in my home and it dose not seem so lonely and also gets my chores done a bit quicker as well, and I have not missed out on any of the story because when I have finished my housework I get a hot drink sit somewhere comfortably and drink my hot drink and getting my hobby going and while I restart where I left of and listen all over again.
I also want to thank you for that marvellous Audio Bible book this is my favourite audio book, with everyone talking there parts lovely.

Quite short- finished in one day- an impressive adaptation nonetheless
This is my first foray in Phantom of the Opera and I was quite impressed at how it was presented and adapted.
I have not seen Gerard Butler’s performance or the silent film or read the book so I came to this completely blind, but the story was presented well enough for me to approach it and devour it in one day.
The voice acting of the phantom was superb, balancing menace with tender vulnerability superbly. The main and supporting cast present a cohesive enough dialogue and play by play of events for you to easily follow the action, with the descriptions of certain scenes by the actors not one bit detracting from the story.
It was a bit hard I admit to keep track of the characters initially, and I believe the tale begins during the chapters during the first act rather than the very beginning. I could be wrong. The narrator is the concierge of the opera house played by Anna Massey, who deliberate jumps from one narrative to the other to bring people up to speed on characters and other subplots. A questionable form of approach, but novel, as if you were listening at her feet while being told the story, which certainly helped when introducing the nameless character known only as The Persian and his motivations for hunting the Phantom.
Curiously the audiobook is divided into tiny three minute segments, but the story itself is told in overall about three or four parts with clear musical interludes. The last two chapters are cast interviews with the main characters including Anna Massey and her experience recording her lines for the production.
Overall quite short but enjoyable and a good introduction. My curiosity is piqued now for the other adaptations and the book of Gaston Leroux’s famously tragic tale of suspense and horror.
