Summary

David Timson talks about Charles Dickens, much loved for his great contribution to classic English Literature.

Left unfinished after Dickens died in 1870, The Mystery of Edwin Drood centres on Edwin Drood's uncle, John Jasper, and his love for Rosa Bud, Edwin's fiancee. Set in the dark, fictional cathedral city of Cloisterham, the novel is awash with guilt, disguise and mystery. It contains some fine writing, and just before his death, Dickens left an indication of where the plot was going, which will be included.

A sampling rather than an introduction

David Timson provides a series of extracts from the novel which are certainly well read by Neville Jason. He does present a variety of characterisations with great skill. What I disliked was the format. In an introduction I would expect more discussion of literary qualities such as structure, language, and theme, and, in this case, some discussion of the special place of the novel in The Dickens Canon. There is not even some elaboration of the contexts of the extracts and why they were chosen.

Someone who has already read the novel might enjoy the extracts but I don’t think that a reader coming upon it for the first time would get much from this sampling.
