Summary

Recognised as a master of high fantasy around the globe, Tolkien's skill for world-building is arguably unrivalled. In The Hobbit, he takes us on a journey as thrilling and unpredictable as the one in its famous sequel, The Lord of the Rings.

Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out onto the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye. He was only pretending to sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance!

Whisked from his comfortable hobbit-hole by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Really enjoyed it, not long watched the last film and having never read the book I thought I would give it a try, very glad I did. This is my first book that I've tried on here and enjoyed it very much!!

Brilliant novel and narration

Must be 30 years or more since I read this book and I was nervous at first about ordering an abridged title as I normally go for unabridged. But honestly, this is just right and moves along at a great pace. Didn't feel rushed and it sounds as though the new Hobbit movie may come in at about this 6 hour length when we finally see all the parts!

My son (9) really enjoyed this too and it would be a great introduction to Tolkein for any imaginative child as well as being great for adults too.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I enjoyed this so much, I was actually disappointed when my 6 hour drive from Cornwall ended. I still sat in the car for another 30 mins! Despite reading the book and watching the film more than once , the audio narrative takes it to a whole new level of imagination.
