Summary

Recognised as a master of high fantasy around the globe, Tolkien's skill for world-building is arguably unrivalled. In The Hobbit, he takes us on a journey as thrilling and unpredictable as the one in its famous sequel, The Lord of the Rings.

Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out onto the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye. He was only pretending to sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance!

Whisked from his comfortable hobbit-hole by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Lord of the Rings.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When Thorin was dying and said that he wanted to die while at peace with Bilbo.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Martin Shaw is an excellent narrator

Where does The Hobbit rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was my first audio book. Wasn't sure what to expect but i was pleasantly surprised. Martin Shaw brought the story & characters to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hobbit?

The way Martin Shaw covered the scene where Gandolfh & the dwarves were trapped by the goblins & wolves.

What about Martin Shaw’s performance did you like?

He brought the book and characters to life, the accents were excellent.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh - especially the scene where Bilbo & Gollum meet

Any additional comments?

Martin Shaw should narrate more books.

delightful!

Bought this for my children aged 6 and 7..
I ended up listening to most of it myself and I loved it.
Tolkien is not great at writing for small children of today, perhaps slightly older would be better. However, there are some very funny moments which they loved and listen to over and over again - mainly the songs and funny voices!
The kids lost interest towards the end as the battles were not for them. but I'm fairly sure it's such a good book they would be back later and appreciate it more.

Great story, TERRIBLE reading,

See this is a great book I read it when I was very little I loved the book, but when I listened to it I was disappointed 😞 to find a terrible reader he would pause in between each word, and he was so emotionless 🫥 and empty. I really wanted to like it.. but I this reading, it's simply terrible 😣. I what's disappointed ☹️.
