Summary

Recognised as a master of high fantasy around the globe, Tolkien's skill for world-building is arguably unrivalled. In The Hobbit, he takes us on a journey as thrilling and unpredictable as the one in its famous sequel, The Lord of the Rings.

Smaug certainly looked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out onto the floor when he caught a sudden thin ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye. He was only pretending to sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance!

Whisked from his comfortable hobbit-hole by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

A brilliant tale, beautifully told! Total Bliss!

The Hobbit was first read to me by my teacher some 45 years ago and since then I have always loved listening to stories. This version of the book was wonderful! Martin Shaw captures the characters and the magic quite perfectly! I was transported back to an age before DVD's, mobiles, Facebook etc when one of the greatest pleasures in life was to settle down to hear a wonderful story being read aloud.

So settle down in your favourite place, press play and ENJOY!

Shaw is adequate

Having listening to LOTR by read by Rob Inglis, Shaw’s attempt in adequate at best. There are other versions out there which make him sound like a child

Children's story come to be loved by adults alike

The performance of this audiobook brought the story to life, with expert changes of intonation for different characters... very entertaining.

Established classic

Martin Shaw makes a great storyteller, I enjoyed his interpretation and the original version bears comparison against the film trilogy.

It's abridged!

Great narration. It's a pity that the book is abridged as then it would be perfect!

An all time classic!

This was a 'must read' book for my 10-year-old son, so we decided to listen to it instead. I'd forgotten how rich and engaging the story was. Great to revisit it again!

Classic Book

This book is action packed and much better than the lord of the rings book. This book tells the tale of Bilbo the hobbit adventure to claim back treasure from a dragon. In this book you will learn how bilbo got hold of the ring and meet gollum for the first time.If you have read or watched any of the films of LOTR you need to read or listen to this book.

too quick

it felt rushed as a voice over and the songs were read out instead of sung overall it felt like the story was sped up I know it's a short book but I just didn't expect it to go that quickly.

Our dogs love it

We are weird as we have the Audible subscription mostly for our dogs who love stories. We weren't sure if Tolkein was going to be above their level, but they absolutely loved Martin Shaw's narration and settled down each evening to listen.
