Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Classic, 2014

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby. There, he has a firsthand view of Gatsby’s lavish West Egg parties - and of his undying love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan.

After meeting and losing Daisy during the war, Gatsby has made himself fabulously wealthy. Now, he believes that his only way to true happiness is to find his way back into Daisy’s life, and he uses Nick to try to reach her. What happens when the characters’ fantasies are confronted with reality makes for a startling conclusion to this iconic masterpiece.

This special audio edition joins the upcoming film - as well as many other movie, radio, theater, and even video-game adaptations - as a fitting tribute to the cultural significance of Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic, widely regarded as one of the greatest stories ever told.

Much better investment than the movie!

This is a beautifully written and narrated examination of superficiality and materialism and in America in the interwar years. It highlights the desire for money and things, drawing attention to the emptiness that can accompany the unconstrained search for more and more. The powerful symbols of Gatsby's house and the eyes of Dr T J Eckleberg, reveal the dominance of commercialism and the hollowness of the continuous search for wealth and recognition. When things go wrong it all collapses in a heap and there's barely a relationship that survives Gatsby's violent end.

Great story, beautifully written, well narrated, and probably more deeply evocative than the multi-million dollar movie. Maybe money can't buy it all, after all?!

Awful narration!

I have listened to well over a hundred audiobook titles, so when I saw this was read by a well known actor I had high hopes. Gosh, it was boring and monotonous! I’ve deleted it from my device. Shame really.

Very entertaining and interesting

I'm not normally a fan of Jake Gyllenhal but I must congratulate him on his ability to portray all of the different characters so well in this audio recording. I found if very convincing and immersive. Great story, I'd always thought I ought to read it and bos I've had the chance to listen to it I think it was well worth the time. Great story of human nature in the era.

Better than the Film..

it really helps when you've got good narration; it's always good when done by actors and actresses . Jake Gillyenhall is brilliant here. We've all seen the film but books are always better. This is a good quick listen of a book written in a seemingly old classic style, by one of the best writers of the time..

Pretty good

It's a very easy listen but it's aged in that the descriptions of people aren't racist or sexist as such judging by the intent it's trying to convey but it's still jarring to hear it.

Wow, just wow

This really is a fantastic tale, expertly delivered by Gyllenhaal.

As a short book on audible it is still worth it. A tale of tragedy that captures its recipient fully. A marvellous piece indeed

My 1st audible book - a great story!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Great Gatsby to be better than the print version?

Having never read the paper version its hard to compare however I think Jake did an amazing job on the story!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gatsby was my favourite character!

Which character – as performed by Jake Gyllenhaal – was your favourite?

All characters were very well read and as someone previously stated he soundds like Leonardo which helped with visualisation!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The details about the parties was fabulous!
