Publisher's Summary

The lives of the talented Aubrey children have long been clouded by their father?s genius for instability, but his new job in the London suburbs promises, for a time at least, reprieve from scandal and the threat of ruin. Mrs. Aubrey, a former concert pianist, struggles to keep the family afloat, but then she is something of a high-strung eccentric herself, as is all too clear to her daughter Rose, through whose loving but sometimes cruel eyes events are seen. Still, living on the edge holds the promise of the unexpected, and the Aubreys, who encounter furious poltergeists, turn up hidden masterpieces, and come to the aid of a murderess, will find that they have adventure to spare.

In The Fountain Overflows, a 1957 best seller, Rebecca West transmuted her own volatile childhood into enduring art. This is an unvarnished but affectionate picture of an extraordinary family, in which a remarkable stylist and powerful intelligence surveys the elusive boundaries of childhood and adulthood, freedom and dependency, the ordinary and the occult.

    "Charming, entertaining and poignant"

I enjoyed the story of the artistic and high-minded if chaotic Aubrey family. The father in his great struggles for the underdog and less noble speculations in commodities; the musical mother and her kind-hearted and highly strung character and the children, each with their own foibles. Through in the exaggeratedly Scots-speaking cousin, murder, poltergeists and mind-reading and you are in for an enjoyable listen, nicely read by Harriet Carmichael.

Yes. I've read this book many times and the audio is a great enhancement.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fountain Overflows?

The scene in Kew Gardens, where the family deal with grief by enjoying the beauty of the lapageria vine.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Where Rose and her mother visit Constance and Rosamund for the first time, with exciting results.

    Any additional comments?

This book has so much depth - it's wonderful in its details about music and education; it's a great family story; everything I say is only one facet of the plot. Well worth reading and listening to!

    "A masterpiece!"

Those reviewers who call this boring simply do not understand the novel. This story features art, music, murder, mental telepathy, and a poltergeist! This is a study of character and family brilliantly written and beautifully delivered. I cannot believe it has taken me all these years to discover this author. I will be moving on to the other two novels in this series about the trials and triumphs of this quirky family.

    "Most boring story!"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you like to hear Scottish accents, this would please you.

What was most disappointing about Rebecca West’s story?

Very simple plot, very little happens, boring

What does Harriet Carmichael bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Accents were pretty.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Fountain Overflows?

The whole thing never should have been published as a novel, maybe a short story.

What disappointed you about The Fountain Overflows?

This book has a very weak plot and meanders pointlessly. It is also very repetitious.
