Publisher's Summary

The Art of War is the most famous and longest-lasting book on the practice of war. The book does not mince words: war is about winning; it is not a gentleman's game; it is about using every means at one's disposal to tip the odds in one's favor. Of the centuries, this book has been used by military figures, war departments, business people, educators, and politicians, to name a few. This is the original work without additional editorial comment.

    "Narriation by speakerphone?"

This review may be subjective, but I can not focus on this audiobook as the narrator sounds as if he's narrating by speakerphone. The echoing, hollow sound is very distracting and I can even get through the first chapter. I find myself becoming frustrated with the sound quality and I have to turn it off. I'm still very interested in this book, but not by this audio file.

    "Worst reader ever!!!"

I was excited about this book after hearing people discuss it for years. I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks but this was by far the worst reader ever. Could not finish it.

    "Good presentation for Audio"

The narrative presentation was appropriate and structured for the listener rather than a reader. The material presented in The Art of War should be contemplated and reviewed, and the audio version is set up to facilitate.

"the narrator (Deaver Brown) killed the experience"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    A better narrator

    Any additional comments?

The book was good, 4 of 5 stars but the narrator (Deaver Brown) was frustrating to listen to. His up and down volume while reading, as if he's turning his head or looking away from the mic had me leaning towards and away from my speakers constantly. At least every other sentence the narrator trips up while reading and leaves an awkward or unnecessary pause that had me focusing more on when the next pause was coming versus the content of what he's actually reading. In chapter 11 the audio cuts out in the middle and continues on later in the story, could be my recording but very frustrating.

    "hard to follow"

struggled to get through first chapter. Narrator read line numbers, which made it hard to follow. It was as if the whole book is a list.

    "Too quick and dirty"

It is basically just a book of proverbs and general principles that don't really go into detail much. It is well organized and fairly comprehensive, but could use a lot more fleshing out of the individual topics. I especially wished that he had covered more about the management of spies and information networks.

"THE WORST AUDIO BOOK I HAVE EVER LISTENED TO"

This is the worst audiobook I have ever listened to. The narrator is terrible. Such poor execution should not be sold.

    "Disappointing Narration - poorly mumbled"

The narration is almost comically bad. The guy sounds like he has indigestion, and is reciting an off-the-cuff best man's speech after too much to drink. He rarely makes it through a sentence without stumbling. This subject matter requires engaging and polished narration. It is a shame that this person got the job and read the whole thing on one take (or so it seems).

"Disappointing - Rapid fire assault fails to artfully distill the content"

There is 15 minutes dedicated to introducing this book, touting that it's methods have been used today far beyond military strategist...classrooms, businesses, neighborhoods, etc. And that's the last we hear of it. What follows is a rapid fire list of strategies that are an assault on the ears.

The speaker uses a staccato approach that starts each statement loud and trails off at the end. This, combines with the fast pace made me grateful for the short duration of the entire book.

Still, I could have overlooked this better had the points included application in the civilians world, as touted in the intro.

Not what I was looking for. Perhaps there is another version to uncover.
