Summary

'Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.'
So begins Daphne du Maurier's masterpiece, Rebecca. When the story's nameless narrator, a young and unassuming lady's maid, meets a wealthy and handsome widower, she is immediately swept off her feet in what many would've considered an unlikely 20th century match. Maxim de Winter, the owner of a large country estate by the name of Manderley, whisks his new bride away to his home in Cornwall, hoping to rid himself of his sinister past. As the heroine begins her new life at Manderley, she comes to the realisation that the shadow of her predecessor, Rebecca de Winter, lives on through the masonry of the home and through the stern and scathing housekeeper, Mrs Danvers.
A tense and unnerving tale, Rebecca depicts the crippling effect that self-doubt and external manipulation can have on a young and innocent woman's spirit. Due to her own feelings of jealousy, du Maurier based the tale on her husband's first fiancée, claiming that Rebecca would demonstrate the 'influence of a first wife on a second', where 'wife two is haunted day and night' and 'tragedy is looming very close.' Much like her heroine, Daphne du Maurier was said to be solitary, comfortable with her own company and possessed of an incredible imagination. First and foremost, however, du Maurier was an excellent storyteller, and Rebecca is undoubtedly a shining example of her talent.

Time Gone By
How uttely old fashioned and beautifully read by Anna Massey. I was transported back to a time of manners and constraint yet exposed the usual human faults. I saw the film and read this as a child, i loved it but didn't understand it, this audible book was like hearing the tale for the first time and was so amazing i didn't want it to stop.

A Classic Suspense Book Which You Can't Put Down
I first came across this book in November 1983 after being told it was a good one. True, it was an unabridged copy but if you wanted an unabridged audio book back then the best copies to go for were the abridged one since audio books were mainly only available on cassette and to have bought the full unabridged copy of this book was not to be thought of. I remember the book held me right from the start all those years ago and I listened to the full two hours thirty minutes of it. Now I have the full unabridged copy and again I enjoyed it from start to finish. True it does have a cliff-hanger ending but the beginning of the story does give you an idea of where the two main living characters are at the time the second Mrs De Winter begins the story. This is a book anyone who likes classics should read but if this is your first time of approaching it I suggest you approach it at a time when you have ample time on your hands because it's a book you won't be able to put down from start to finish. One of my favourite parts has always been when Maxim takes the second Mrs De Winter into his true past which he realises he must do given events which have at that time happened. What a shame Juliet Stevenson didn't read this book. She'd have been just the right person for it. Maybe one day, you just never know, especially if Audible do their own copy of it.

Audible makes this much easier to digest
I've started this one so many times in paperback form, but couldn't quite get on with the narrator's stream of consciousness.
Audible made this much easier to finish and I can finally cross this off the To Be Read list

Absolute Treat
I got this as part of a 2 for 1 deal as I was at a bit of a loss as to what to listen to next. I wanted something escapist and engrossing and didn’t I hit the jackpot. Have had difficulty turning it off. Fabulous. Ticked all my boxes. Took me away from wet, cold, lockdown January.

Brilliant
Wasn't sure at the start with such a feable female lead but the plot picked up and drew me in. A really excellent plot and a very satisfying read. The narration was great if a little faint at times. Ps "Yes" I said

Wonderful classic
Brilliant narration by the incomparable Anna Massey - it was especially fun hearing her do all the voices after seeing her play Mrs Danvers in a tv adaptation.

Voice is too posh
I can’t get into this story because the voice is so posh it sounds fake. I read the story as a teenager and loved it, so I know the story itself is great. Unfortunately the voice bugs me too much to be able to focus.

Superb actor
This is one of the few audiobooks I've listened to where I've already read the book and it was an incredible experience. The narration is absolutely superb
