A classic story read to perfection

Martin Jarvis, in my very humble opinion, makes the audio books that he reads come alive brilliantly with each characters voice that he creates. As someone else said in another Dickens review, ‘It’s as if there where 20 actors on stage and they were all him’. So ‘Oliver Twist’ was no disappointment to me and I can thoroughly recommend this classic story read by a man who is master of his craft.
Just to point out that the Audible title ‘Oliver Twist Part 1’ is a little confusing. Part 2 is included in the download. You will have the complete book.

So much more than the films

I like to listen to Dickens stories when driving, especially when driving long distances. Dicken's use of language is always a delight and the names of his characters bring a smile to my face. I also tend to choose those books that have Martin Jarvis as the narrator because he brings the characters to life just by the different voices and accents. Oliver Twist is a much longer book than I thought from watching the television adaptations and the films. More happens after the failed burglary than I realised.

Martin Jarvis is great!Per uno straniero è utile poter ascoltare i libri inglesi classici letti così chiaramente, sembra che ci siano più attori a leggere e non solo uno. Veramente strepitoso

Classic rags-to-riches tale

Brought up in the workhouse, orphan Oliver escapes to London and finds himself caught in Fagin’s criminal underworld.

Everyone knows the basic plot of this classic tale, but I was surprised to learn how much of it was new to me. It turns out that the many film and TV versions rarely do justice to the full story as the author intended, so the second half of the story is often left out. I’ve had ‘Oliver Twist’ on my bookshelf for about thirty years but have never managed to get past the first chapter. Finding the weighty tome available as an audiobook, I jumped at the chance to listen rather than read. The lovely Martin Jarvis brings the text to life with a marvellous variety of voices and accents, and even succeeds in making those passages where Dickens goes off on a tangent about life in general appealing to the listener.

Given that I also have ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ and ‘Great Expectations’ gathering dust on my bookshelves, I think audio versions of these two will soon be on my listening agenda.

Dickens + Jarvis = Brilliant

What made the experience of listening to Oliver Twist the most enjoyable?

Martin Jarvis makes this well-known tale come to life by the vividness of his characterisation and breadth of expression. He is unmatched as a narrator of Dickens' prose, which is, as always, a treasure trove of delight.

Outstanding

My first read of Oliver Twist, having only previously seen film and stage productions. Dickens’ character portrayal and story-telling is incomparable, and Oliver Twist is no exception. Outstanding narration by Martin Jarvis, whose gift for almost inhabiting the characters, brings each one to life, making the audiobook Oliver Twist as entertaining, if not more so, than any dramatised version of the book. Outstanding.

Excellent narration of an excellent book

Martin Jarvis brought this well loved classic to life with his wonderful range of voices.
I had forgotten just how much veiled criticism of living and social conditions Dickens incorporates into his novels. The narrator seems to find just the right tone for each character and situation.
