Summary

The outcast youth Ishmael, succumbing to wanderlust during a dreary New England autumn, signs up for passage aboard a whaling ship. The Pequod sails under the command of the one-legged Captain Ahab, who has set himself on a monomaniacal quest to capture the cunning white whale that robbed him of his leg: Moby-Dick. Capturing life on the sea with robust realism, Melville details the adventures of the colorful crew aboard the ship as Ahab pursues his crusade of revenge, heedless of all cost.

"The greatest of American novels." ( Atlantic Monthly)
"[A]n intense, superbly authentic narrative. Its theme and central figure...are reminiscent of Job in his search for justice and of Oedipus in his search for truth." ( Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature)

Very little story given its length

The book is very long, but the actual story is probably 25% of it. The rest is occasionally interesting monologuing about whales from a 19th century perceptive.

Amazing piece of work

When revenge is combined with obsession… death will be knocking at your door!

A classic tale well read

Firstly, so we’ll narrated, it made the book come to life. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the whale ships, the people, the whales, which led me to the chase. A good story, well written. Highly recommended.

Now I understand why it's popular!

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to Anthony Heald tell the story of Moby Dick. He brought all the characters to life and even made the parts about whales and whaling interesting. Highly recommend this version.

amazing

the rich pages of this book form a hard read but an amazing book and possibly I'm my opinion the greatest novel ever put to paper.

Epic storytelling

Very well read.
The litigious nature of the story telling may not be for everyone, for long passages describe every aspect of the leviathan, however if you surrender yourself to the detail the narrative is compelling.

Difficult but worth it

It’s an absolute classic. I found it in a book shop and decided to read it, it only took me the first page to realise it was very complicated and I found it very useful for someone else to read it for me. I’m 12 and I finished this but I will definitely have to read it again later on to fully comprehend so maybe more useful for older readers!

Brilliant Narration!

This perhaps could have been quite a dry book to read myself but the narrator brought the text alive.
Melville’s descriptive prose is exquisite and some of the dry wit made me laugh out loud! This book is full of surprises: homosexual love, respect for whales and violent Quakers! A warning though - the description of how they actually kill a whale is vile and made me feel sick.

Good book but goes off plot a lot

I enjoyed listening to this book. One of the main reasons is the narration. Anthony Heald really made the book come alive. I am not usually a fan of dramatic readings but it worked brilliantly for me this time.

I did find the book a bit hard going when the author went off plot and started talking about whaling. This happened a lot in the middle and it did detract from the rhythm of the story. But this book is a classic and who am I to argue with it.

Overall it’s a good listen.

absolute classic

Loved the narration on this... I had never read this classic and although at times the chapters seemed to drag .. it all came together at the end. Really glad I opted for the unabridged version as certain small details may have been omitted. I'm not going to give spoilers... all I will say is its a breath taking conclusion..
