Elles renvoient aux expérimentations nazies sur les effets de l'isolement absolu, lorsque, aux frontières de la folie, le cerveau humain parvient à déployer ses facultés les plus étranges.

Dans cette fable inquiétante parue en 1943, un an après son suicide, Zweig porte un regard désespéré sur une époque qui ne laisse comme alternative que la démence ou la mort.
Édouard Baer donne toute sa dimension à ce grand texte où l'angoisse est sans cesse à fleur de mots.
