Summary

The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself "Don Quixote" and, with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests. Many of these adventures, including tilting at windmills, are established in European literary consciousness.

Originally published in two volumes a decade apart (in 1605 and 1615), Don Quixote has been brought to life in its entirety in this audiobook.

Fun but far too long

The wonderful narrator helped me to persist with this story. Each individual scrape that Don Quixote and Sancho Panza get into is hilarious and wonderfully written, but there are too many of them. and don't build into any crescendo, just a sad end.

Chivalry isn’t dead, for through this book it lives in me...

This book has changed my life. It has taught me so much about how to be.

The writing is - almost literally - out of this world! The characters are inspired, the relationship between DQ and SP is beautifully developed (and evolves over time), and the plot is captivating throughout.

Also, the narration is fantastic, along with the writing, evoking tears of joy and sadness, and laughter throughout.

Please download this book, you will not regret it.

A classic well deserving of it's notorioty

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!"

Simply the Best!

What a fantastic book. And Roy McMillan's rendering is just stunning - the most talented and sensitive narrator I've listened to over the years. Thank you, Roy! And John Ormsby's translation is superior to all of the many others out there.

Narrated entertainingly

One of my all-time favourites, this version was narrated beautifully with individual characters brought to life. I used excepts of this as a teaching tool and will happily do so again, the accompanying pdf materials having saved me a lot of preparation time.

Excellent !

An excellent novel but that's not news! It's very long and well worth it. So funny and sad too. Great reader's performances. Just superb!
