Summary

Denis Stone, a self-conscious young poet, is invited to the English town home of Crome, renowned for its gatherings of intellectuals. Hosted by Henry and Priscilla Wimbush, the house party has much to offer the naive Denis. The guests include the self-contained Anne, whom Denis adores; the handsome artist Gombauld, his rival for Anne's affections; and the cynical Mr. Scogan. All have their stories and ideas to unfold but, as Denis comes to realize, ideas cannot compensate for reality.

This is the first novel penned by Aldous Huxley; it launched his storied writing career, which included Brave New World, The Doors of Perception, and Mortal Coils.

Well performed diversion

This is one of many books written in the early twentieth century concerning the lives of upper middle/lower upper class artists and intellectuals and if I had started it in print I probably wouldn't have persevered, having had my fill of that particular genre.

However as an audiobook it's brief enough to remain entertaining and the excellent narration really brings out the comedic and satirical elements of Huxley's excellent prose and gives each character uniqueness and depth. Overall and I'm glad to have "read" it.

The plot, typical of the genre, is quite minimal it's more a collection of vignettes and observations held together by the interactions of the characters. The story of the diminutive Hercules was probably my favourite segment.
