Audible Editor Reviews

Editors Select, November 2016 - I was an Anne of Green Gables groupie in the late '80s, after the original CBC miniseries came out. A young, bookish orphan with a fierce love of drama and endless spirit, Anne was the poster child for nerdy, slightly precocious girls everywhere and I WAS IN. I read all the books in the series, memorized Noyes' poem "The Highwayman", and let my best friend know that she was my "bosom friend" (for the record, she thought I was weird). So it was with the very best kind of nostalgia that I revisited my favorite childhood book with the Canadian Rachel McAdams providing the perfect happy, nuanced, and lovely voice for the tale. I know what my family will be listening to on our six-hour drive south for Thanksgiving. —Emily, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century. In this story of "kindred spirits", McAdams' touching and heartfelt narration proves she is just that - bonded on a deep level to this shimmering classic.

When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.

What the Critics Say

"Listeners will relish this production of L.M. Montgomery's classic.... As Anne, McAdams's delivery is light and breathy and ever so speedy, but clear and eloquent." (AudioFile)

    "One of the best"

This is by far one of the best Audible books i have complete yet. What a perfect book. Lucy Maud monkey's tales of anne are brilliant. Rachel Mcadams reading this is just perfect i won't be able to listen to any other Anne book of she's not reading it.

    "A timeless children's classic"
Would you consider the audio edition of Anne of Green Gables to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, so I don't know.

What did you like best about this story?

Anne's personality, she's an extraordinary child! I couldn't believe how hilarious Anne was. The narrator's voice reminded me of Anna in Frozen, as did how much Anne could talk and her fanciful thinking. Her melodrama did remind me of Amy in Little Women, but overall Anne is a unique character who I gave up anime time just to listen to her exploits. I liked her that much. She is constantly talking, adding drama to non-dramatic events which does drive her adopted parents a little mad, but while her adopted mother slash Aunt rarely shows her amusement, Anne's mannerisms bring lots of love and light to her new home.

What does Rachel McAdams bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I wouldn't have necessarily read it as I don't like most books termed as classic literature, she brought it to life!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I have to say I preferred the earlier parts of the book when Anne was still a child and getting into an insane amount of scrapes: the later part of the book got a bit more serious, and there was less mischief which I heartily missed. You'll need tissues, that's all I'll say about it, and Anne has to grow up fast. She was 16 or so by the end, so in our day still a teen but back then 16 was classed as an adult which is why Anne has to make a few personal sacrifices when life circumstances change.

    Any additional comments?

I knew that Anne was firm friends with Diana before I read the book, which made me curious as to how the two became best friends when an incident split the two up and I couldn't see how they would get back together. You know the times in life where accidents happen which aren't the person involved's fault, yet they get the blame? Those happen to Anne a lot, and were highly amusing to hear about. Anne's love of melodrama does mean her sincerity is sometimes not seen by those she is apologising to, at least not the first time round. Life is never dull with Anne. <br/><br/>I received a copy from Audible in exchange for an honest review on my blog Nayu's Reading Corner

"Beautifully narrated and such a wonderful story"
What did you like most about Anne of Green Gables?

I loved the way the narrator captured the very essence of the story

Who was your favorite character and why?

I alternated between Anne with her exuberance and Merilla's stoical common sense approach to bringing up little girls

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think Matthew and Anne's relationship moved me the most.

    Any additional comments?

    Beautifully narrated throughout.

    "An old favourite beautifully read"

I was a little apprehensive to listen to Anne of Green Gables as an audiobook because it is one of my favourite childhood books. Anne is like an old friend to me I was afraid the story would be ruined by a bad narrator. There are many versions of this book available, read by many different narrators but this is the version to choose. Rachel McAdams reads this story wonderfully! I feel as though she enjoys telling the story and reads naturally & comfortably, with expression but not over- dramatically. And her voice is just lovely to listen to. I would love it if she were to return & read the rest of the series! Please?!

    "Amazing. Listen to this book."

I am sitting on a bench outside my son's school, having just finished listening to Anne of Green Gables, and I am actually crying. The story was lovely, made even lovelier by Rachel McAdams' narration. If she doesn't do the next book in the series, I don't know what I will do with my life.

    "Rachel McAdams Exceeds Expectations"

From even the sample you can gauge that McAdams' voice is smooth and clear, and perfectly suited to this book. She glides through the narration, and tilts her voice excitedly for Anne and sternly somber for Marilla Cuthbert. Her voice is crisp and bright in the earphones, or makes for lovely musicality to lull you to sleep at night.

The story itself, if you aren't already connected to it from childhood, is a bit dull. By modern standards anyway. A young orphan girl is mistakenly sent to live with a couple, a brother and sister in their late fifties. They decide to keep her and then, ya know, life keeps happening from there.

It is refreshingly charming, a classic family delight. Just, don't expect a dramatic climax or a thrilling ride throughout the novel. Accept the enchantment of it for what it is.

    And enjoy.

    "AMAZING!!"

This was an indescribably lovely book because of the beauty of the descriptiveness of all the beauties of nature and many deep emotions felt by the main character, Anne which allowed the listener to feel as though present among it all. It marvelously told of how the main character, Anne, thrived despite many of the difficult and unfortunate circumstances of her past and present that she dealt with almost daily at times but got through. Lastly, it is an example of the extreme sacrifice Anne made to care for her ailing adoptive mother despite an opportunity afforded her of a much coveted scholarship to continue her education and put aside her tremendous drive to go further and pursue a future in which she would likely have lead her to do great things given her superior intellectual gifts as well as a big heart. Rachel McAdam's narration was superb and her pleasant voice easy to listen to via audio books. I highly recommend this book.

I admit I bought the book for the reader, having enjoyed watching McAdams' in several movies. I expected that she would read it well. But the performance gave the impressions that this was McAdams' favorite book and she was pouring her whole self into it. Add to that the over the top character of Anne, and you get a truly heartwarming audio performance.
