Summary

George Eliot's first full-length novel Adam Bede is a profound rendering of 19th century English pastoral life. This timeless story of seduction and betrayal follows the virtuous carpenter Adam Bede, whose world is soon disrupted when the all-too-beautiful Hetty betrays him for another villager. Her actions precipitate a turmoil of tragic events that shake the very foundations of their serene rural community. Eliot's gift for leisurely and lyrical prose is in full effect here and her insight into human emotion and complexity is unrivalled.

A story of country folk in the time of John Wesley

I did not expect quite so much preaching, and found the book rather long. The plot could well have been dealt with in half as many words. The narrator captured the mood perfectly and was adept at voicing the recognisable characters with great variety of tone and dialect.

The best

This book is absolutely wonderful. The characters are terrific. Mrs Poyser is so entertaining in her speech I’m tempted to start the book all over again. And Adam Bede is the hero for me! I wish I had read it in my teens.

an unread classic?

A really good story well written by Mary - a brilliant writer,

I purchased the book but print was too small so i bought this instead and i’m so glad that I did.

I loved the different accents of the narrator - well spoken and easy to understand all the way through.

Great book, brilliantly read.

Georgina Sutton’s voices & diction bring George Eliot’s first masterpiece alive. I could not recommend more.

Excellent

Wonderful book, beautifully read. Very much a Victorian morality tale but very well written and performed.
