Summary

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto, of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized, is one of the greatest moments in literary history.

A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

Excellent Reading

It’s not for me to evaluate this great work but to say that John Slattery’s reading captures the essence of the time and the poignancy of the story fully. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Read the other Hemingway books

I had read and enjoyed the tense, if dark, For Whom the Bell Tolls a couple of years ago. This year during yet another lockdown I sought another Hemingway book to let me escape the constant noise in the media about masks and lockdowns and statistics about death. I read The Old Man and the Sea which was wonderful. the simplicity of it: an old man, the sea (not much of a spoiler there), one boy, one boat, one shack, one big fish. it is a beautiful book and was the perfect antidote to the chaos and fear mongering of lockdown. A Farewell to Arms is no such book. I don't know the background to Hemingway's state of mind when he wrote it but it seems to be starting out in a similar style to FWTBT then descends into romantic twaddle. The author creates some kind of drama when the hero deserts his ambulance driver post, but that feels contrived and the drama ends there. He kills off some folk near the end which was a bit of a dark turn, although I couldn't help but wish that the writer had killed off everyone in Chapter 1 and saved us the boring journey.

Wonderful of course.

Great story, Excellent narrator. Simple pure language but complex themes. Usual hilarious, ridiculous but endearing leading characters.

A relatable story of love, loss and life.

A humbling story, with realism that makes it all the more hard hitting. Fantastically performance by John Slattery. The voices are distinct and each warm and welcoming.

A Farewell to Arms

The story lacked depth and was predictable in places. Very average. Disappointing from a celebrated writer.

Beautiful!

The story is great but the narration by John Slattery deserves a special mention - he is fantastic and his Italian accents are perfect.

A disappointment.

My first Hemingway book and I was not impressed. I found Catherine to be insufferably written and a wholly unrealistic character, more a male fantasy than a complex human being.
