Summary
Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto, of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized, is one of the greatest moments in literary history.
A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

a small story within a big one
I am not familiar with the work of Hemingway but thoroughly enjoyed this. I liked the reader's American accent, though he wobbled a little on Scottish, but this made it quaint.
A well written story with Hemingway surprising me on his knowledge of childbirth but I was not convinced by his narrative that he had met many heavily pregnant women.
The book was banned in Italy at one point I believe, presumably due to the description of retreat but actually I enjoyed the Italian characters.
A book where I never guessed the ending - fabulous

A relatable story of love, loss and life.
A humbling story, with realism that makes it all the more hard hitting. Fantastically performance by John Slattery. The voices are distinct and each warm and welcoming.

a must listen to
A Farewell to Arms is beautifully written by Hemmingway in his own distinctive style and a worthy narration by John Slattery

Genius. And performance was incredible.
Brilliant writing. Brilliant narration. Hemmingway at his most evocative. He is a master for a reason. This is the reason

A disappointment.
My first Hemingway book and I was not impressed. I found Catherine to be insufferably written and a wholly unrealistic character, more a male fantasy than a complex human being.

Superb apart from Catherine.
The narration of this book was excellent but spoilt for me every time Catherine appeared. A decision was made to make her sound like a contemporary middle class woman for 1929 but that unfortunately sounds ridiculous now.

I didn’t give up, thank goodnesd
John Slattery, who I like very much, reads this book marvellously. It seems like Hemingway wrote no sentence of more than 10 words. In the end the effect is quite hypnotic I have even found myself started to speak in this staccato way. I knew nothing of Hemingway before I read this book. However, I had seen a group photograph of Chinese Ernest Hemingway look-a-likes. I thought Hemingway a macho writer. I thought I wouldn’t like the book. I thought it would be about the heroics of war.
I was wrong.
Initially Catherine and the protagonist annoyed me. Their conversations seemed banal. In the end I thought her brave. I thought him brave, I started to admire him. Hemingway felt it necessary, towards the end, to make it clear that he was against war. He tells the story of the ants on the log that was put into the fire. Their world was doomed. I think Hemingway betrayed himself there. The book would be stronger without the ant anecdote.
Don’t give up in this book. I started off being very bored but ended up being quite moved. I’m even considering listing to some more Hemingway.

Great Hemingway Book.
I listened to this having really enjoyed For Whom The Bell Tolls .
I love Hemingway's style of writing.
He captures the horror and futility of war in both books.
A must read for everyone.

A Hemingway Classic
An excellent book brought to life by a decent narration. Only slight criticism is the accents of the female characters.

Dull material, tediously read.
The monotonous reading doesn't help to liven what seems to be dull material anyway. Gave up around chapter 7.
