Young Jody lives with his ma and pa on a farm in backwoods Florida. Life is hard there: cutting wood, planting fields, hauling water from a distant sinkhole. It is dangerous: wolves and bears roam the night. It's also lonely for a young boy. One spring day, Jody's pa kills a deer for meat. When Jody sees her spotted fawn in the brush, he convinces his father they should bring the fawn home. Thus begins a year when deer and boy are never far from each other. But the day will come when Jody must make a terrible choice between his beloved pet and his family's survival.
The Yearling, published 50 years ago, is an enduring classic which won the Pulitzer Prize. As it follows Jody from childhood to the first steps of adulthood, it has touched the hearts of readers of all ages. Now, with Tom Stechschulte's warm narration, this moving story will delight an even wider audience.

Wonderful book, good story, some predictable elements, but the "twist" was unexpected. I expected a whole different reason for the "big decision." This was better. Warm, authentic and suitable for all ages, cultures and interests. Narrator very good. Recommended -- in fact, should be required reading for students of the human community. Tolerance, humor, survival, family, fathers and sons.... just great.
"The first book ever to make me cry!"
A heartwarming and heart-wrenching story of a boy's growing up with his faithful friend beside him. This is a story I will read many times over and share with my children when they get a little older. the narrator was superb and really brought the story to life. I listen to a lot of audio books and I must say this is one of the best I've ever heard! Take the time to listen, I don't think you will be sorry.
"Best and most touching coming-of-age story ever"
The characterization, the rural simplicity, simple narrative arc, the friendship with Fodder-Wing, the closeness of the family, the descriptions of the landscape and its wildlife--it's like Huckleberry Finn, Little House on the Prairie, and the parable of the prodigal son all rolled into one.
"A true classic"
This book is on everyones list of the most important "Florida Books". After listening to it, I understand why it has so many devoted fans. Everything about this book is a wonder: the characters, the narrative and dialog, the depiction of old Florida, and the story telling! I recommend it highly.
Made me feel like I was right there with the Baxter's, seeing the sights, hearing there sounds, tasting the food & feeling their emotions. There's was a hard, but honorable life.
"I will never forget it!"
My mom told me she read this when she was younger and she said she loved it and it was the reason she feel in love with Florida nature. I was a bit surprised by how country it was and that my mom liked it but it was perfect for me. Since I live so close to where this book was written am going to visit soon! I hear they have a museum and restaurant. It was interesting to view my own backyard from this time period.
The narrator did a great job. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, as long as you like a tear jerking, tug at the heart strings kind of story. It's along the lines of old yeller.
I forgot how great this book was. Awesome reading as well. Great use of different voices
"Great Realistic Fiction"
The life and times of early Florida. What a phenomenal account Ms. Rawlings has captured.
"A coming of age tail"
Very slow novel with a powerful ending. The author does a great job of capturing the difficulties and beauty of life in the Everglades. You'll love it if you're into nature and enjoy books by Jack London. Younger audiences may find it overly sincere.
A great coming of age story for adults... and children! Beautifully told story of a boy growing up in the woods of Florida (I think!) - wonderfully evocative writing and a great fitting narrator.
