Janner Wingfeather's father was the High King of Anniera. But his father is gone. The kingdom has fallen. The royal family is on the run, and the Fang armies of Gnag the Nameless are close behind.
Janner and his family hope to find refuge in the last safe place in the world: the Green Hollows - a land of warriors feared even by Fangs of Dang. But there's a big problem. Janner's little brother - heir to the throne of Anniera - has grown a tail. And gray fur. Not to mention two pointed ears and long, dangerous fangs. To the suspicious folk of the Green Hollows, he looks like a monster. But Janner knows better. His brother isn't as scary as he looks. He's perfectly harmless. Or is he?
Join the Wingfeathers on an adventure filled with mystery, betrayal, and sneakery in a land of tasty fruits. There's a monster on the loose, and the truth lurks in the shadows.

I loved the first two books in this series, so I was really excited to see books three and four were available. But something's very wrong. Peter Sanderson, who narrated the first two books, was quirky but quickly became a part of the story. The author has taken over the narration and suddenly several of the characters have strange not-quite-Irish accents, which I find very distracting. But more than that, the poetry in the words, which made the first two books so lyrical, has gone. I'm only about half way through and still hoping the original world, so beautifully created, is still there, somewhere...
"Like the story, NOT the narration"
Not the audible book. The narration is so bad that even when you listen and don't do anything else, the characters run together. The author/narrator doesn't even bother to continue the same cadence or voice characteristics as the previous narrator. This is an enjoyable series, but the narration sabotages the momentum and characters.
enjoyed gentleman who narrated the first two books better, but Andrew Peterson grew on me. the story is great, but perhaps a tad dark for young listeners. looking forward to the movie.
One of the best fantasy sagas around! I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a good adventure in the style of The Chronically of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. Great for all ages!
"Where'd the other narrator go?"
Great story. No complaints except that I could wish it was written for a more adult crowd. Also, the narrator changed to the author, which isn't inherently evil but is difficult to adjust to. Mr. Peterson reads it like the child's story it is; dynamic differences in the characters inflection and accents, and these thing are perfectly grand, except that everything is colored in crayon in my mind because of it.
"The kids and I loved it!!"
The kids and I have enjoyed following the ups and downs of the Wingfeather family. We are anxious to hear the next book!
In the beginning, I struggled to adapt to Andrew Peterson reading the book. But by the end, I found myself wishing that he had read them all. He brought such life to each character. This book moved me to tears more than once. It was a beautiful experience to be a part of. Thank you for reminding me that a good story is one that takes the reader on an incredible journey.
We love this series and this is our favorite book so far! It is SOOO good! I love that my boys and I are so enthralled with such a rich series. Each sentence is so well-written. My sons are learning great writing by listening to this. I read the first two books out loud and decided to get the audible for this third book. I'm so glad I did! Not only does it save my voice but I love hearing it read by the author himself! Highly recommend!!!!
"Great story, new reader"
Love this series. Peterson did a wonderful job in creating a world and characters that are easy to like and care about. The narration is performed by the author for this book. Let me just say that the reader for the first 2 was really good.
"I have a new favorite author!"
I am in love with these stories! Courage, hope, truth, strength, weakness, struggle, adventure! Just amazing!
This book as well as the previous 2 in the Wingfeather Saga are incredible! I have no other words. Each one has left me in tears. Bravo Mr. Peterson, Bravo!
