Publisher's Summary

Fletcher is nothing more than a humble blacksmith's apprentice when a chance encounter leads to the discovery that he has the ability to summon demons from another world. Chased from his village for a crime he did not commit, he must travel with his demon to the Vocans Academy, where the gifted are trained in the art of summoning.

The academy will put Fletcher through a gauntlet of grueling lessons, training him as a battlemage to fight in the Hominum Empire's war against the savage orcs. Rubbing shoulders with the children of the most powerful nobles in the land, Fletcher must tread carefully.

The power-hungry Forsyth twins lurk in the shadows, plotting to further their family's interests. Then there is Sylva, an elf who will do anything she can to forge an alliance between her people and Hominum, even if it means betraying her friends. Othello is the first ever dwarf at the academy, and his people have long been oppressed by Hominum's rulers, which provokes tension amongst those he studies alongside.

Fletcher will find himself caught in the middle of powerful forces, with nothing but his demon, Ignatius, to help him. As the pieces on the board manoeuvre for supremacy, Fletcher must decide where his loyalties lie. The fate of an empire is in his hands....

    "Fantastic"

This is a great start to what is going to be a fantastic series. There are parts of this book that remind me of Harry Potter, David A Wells and Robert Jordan / Brandon Sanderson if you like any of these then you are going to love this. The narrator isn't someone I have Hurd before but never the less does a good job. I have already got book 2.

    "cliché but entertaining"

I have to start this review by staying that this book was entertaining enough and considering getting the next installment (finish it and you'll understand). BUT... this is not a great fantasy book. The characters are overly black and white, it is fairly predictable and the plot relies on a lot of coincidences and is driven by cliché characters. If this would bother you, don't bother; if it is less of an issue and you just want some light entertainment, give it a go! Maybe I am just being a little cynical!
The narrator had a nice and easy to listen to voice, but very annoyingly, there is a significant pause between each of the (fairly short) chapters! I kept thinking my headphones were cutting out - have given the narration 3 starts but feel bad, as this probably wasn't the narrator's fault.

    "pretty mediocre "

the book starts off ok enough, but after a while the story loses its way and just becomes monotonous to listen to. The narration is poorly edited with a lot of line flubbs, poor pronunciation of words all over and dry delivery making it a chore to to listen to.

    dropped after 4 hours.

    "BRILLIANT STORY!"

Really good except for a few mispronounced words - a bit annoying but that might be the OCD. Otherwise a fantastic story.

"Good start to a promising series"

It is always nice to find another author starting a series of epic fantasy books. I don't see the series setting the hills alight but this was enjoyable nonetheless. Slightly formulaic in as much as the story is : orphan saved by kind man, develops special powers and goes to school for the gifted where he trains to become a mighty warrior.

Not the most original but no less enjoyable for it as I am a sucker for this kind of thing. Main character annoyingly immature and righteous at times but I think this is deliberate from the author.

Surrounding characters are predictable - dwarf with obligatory Scottish accent. Elf with aloof manner but is actually all right in the end. Spoiled aristocracy children with public school accents that are essentially blatant racists

Nice new concept in use of magic and other worldy forces. Well narrated from what I can remember 2 weeks later. Not outstanding but good accents and good consistency of accents

Straight on to the next book in the series

    "Enjoyable story, well performed"

Easy going story, nothing complex or surprising but I enjoyed it a lot with likeable characters. Voice acting excellent and I've just bought the next book.

    "Amazing"

I found everything I love in a story here, the voice actor was amazing and I enjoyed the plot tho the fact he leaves it on such good cliff hangers irritates and impresses me. Keep up the good work! Taran.
