Summary

“So you won't keep anything from me again?"
He put his hand to his chest. "Cross my heart and hope to die."
"Okay then. Though you don't actually have a heart," she said.
"I know."
"And technically, you've already died."
"I know that too."
"Just so we're clear."

Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction.

Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source – the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard.

When all hell breaks loose, it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead. Though he's about to discover that being a skeleton doesn't stop you from being tortured, if the torturer is determined enough. And if there's anything Skulduggery hates, it's torture… Will evil win the day? Will Stephanie and Skulduggery stop bickering long enough to stop it? One thing's for sure: evil won't know what's hit it.

"The balance between humour and danger is well handled in Derek Landy's fun, fast-paced fantasy." (The Guardian)

Close enough

I've loved the SP books for years and the narrating in this is good.

Some of the characters, like Skulduggery Pleasant for instance, don't sound how you would expect. He's supposed to have a smooth voice like velvet but it sounds more like Velcro and China Sorrows sounds very different to what I'd expect.

Apart from that I have fully enjoyed this audio book and am looking forward to hearing the rest of the series!

annoying extras

I wish it didn't have the extra bit at the end of each chapter, it's a bit annoying

A total pleasure

Wonderfully written, very witty stories that are worth listening to... Even if you're in your 30s, like me! These stories have given me so much pleasure. Beautifully read, Rupert Degas' voice is so lovely to listen to, his voices for each of the characters are amazing. For each voice it becomes very easy to suspend disbelief and actually think your listening to more than one person.

Fantastic

Excellent story, enjoyable twists, a little dark but definitely still suitable for children. The main character is a young girl which is often poorly represented by male authors but she was written perfectly, the author playing on his strengths by making her a little Tom boyish which works really well for the character and will make it enjoyable for kids of all genders. It's exciting and in depth enough for adults to enjoy the series too.
Definitely one of my all time favorites!

Fantastic!

The narrator is amazing and really brings the story and characters to life! He really does have a great range of voices!

My 5 and 7 year old cant wait to get in the car (as well as us adults!) to be able to listen to it. Car journeys have never been so quiet and trouble free! Really cannot recommend it enough. We are looking forward to rest of the series.

Hits the spot

Would you listen to Skulduggery Pleasant again? Why?

Yes, after a while it was quite amusing with a novel plot line. The reading was also first class which made the characters come alive .

Who was your favorite character and why?

I wouldn't pick out one of the main characters as the best but certainly Stephanie was unlike many main characters likeable.

What does Rupert Degas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He makes the story come alive with a very good interpretation of the characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

AMAZING

This is an amazing book series, the first always a great read. The audiobook was wonderfully done by Rupert Degas, not the best, but definitely better than who took over from book 3 onwards.
Mr. Landy is a great author, very imaginative, and his SP book series is an awe-inspiring piece of work.
