"A fast-paced fantasy adventure which is both hilarious and hair raising" (We Love This Book)"This is a hilarious story, just right for boys age 7 - 10" (Parent's In Touch website)
Runner and mother of two from Hove, UK. Relies on good audiobooks to stop the kids from fighting in the car. Occasionally buys one for her.
My boys (aged 6 & 8) are big fans of werewolf fiction (try the Beastly Boys series) but this is the first book we've come across where turning into a werewolf is a BAD thing. Generally you go hairy and get superpowers whilst retaining your human level control.
Not so here. Sammy Feral's family get turned into the type of werewolf that goes mad and tries to eat everything / turn everyone. Sammy discovers that he has a gift which allows him to understand mythical creatures - unfortunately this means that when his Dad tells him he's going to rip him to pieces (when a werewolf), Sammy can understand what he's saying. This is obviously very frightening for him, and the author pulls no punches with describing fear / sadness / panic.
The storyline is obvious enough for the boys to get a thrill from the scarey bits, but know it's going to be OK. You wouldn't perhaps put this on for a 6 yr old on a dark, night journey on a full moon though ....
