Summary

Ten-year-old Jamie Matthews has just moved to the Lake District with his Dad and his teenage sister, Jasmine for a 'Fresh New Start'. Five years ago his sister's twin, Rose, was blown up by a terrorist bomb. His parents are wrecked by their grief, Jasmine turns to piercing, pink hair and stops eating. The family falls apart. But Jamie hasn't cried in all that time. To him Rose is just a distant memory. Jamie is far more interested in his cat, Roger, his birthday Spiderman T-shirt, and in keeping his new friend Sunya a secret from his dad. And in his deep longing and unshakeable belief that his Mum will come back to the family she walked out on months ago. When he sees a TV advert for a talent show, he feels certain that this will change everything and bring them all back together once and for all.

Wonderful to listen to

Mature themes dealt with sensitively and with a light hearted touch. A very enjoyable listen! (I’m an adult listening to it before sharing with my young people).

Keep a tissue handy . . . .

Probably one of the best books I have listened to from Audible. Its quality of writing, as well as superbly narrated by David Tennant, makes compelling listening.
It is a great mix of characters that each have so many issues to deal with, yet seem to struggle through each day with the odds stacked against them. To some it may seem very emotional, but I would describe it as "happy sad".
100% recommended.

Wonderful writing, wonderful reading

It's the quality of the viewpoint that makes this novel so special. Jamie is totally believable, and David Tennant's reading inhabits Jamie completely. It is difficult to believe that this is Annabel Pitcher first novel - it's pitch perfect. The enormity of child abandonment made me sick with rage, but Jamie's understanding of the grief that brought it about almost helped me to understand...

I feel mean pointing out small errors of geography (drive from Ambleside to St Bee's Head via a motorway? I think not) when the novel as a whole is so achingly brillant - but hey, there's always something to learn.

Beautiful and lots of fun

Not many emotions are left out when you listen to this book. Lovely use of language to produce a story that is sometimes funny, sometimes sad but always entertaining.Wonderful family story that we can all relate to. Very listenable and hugely enjoyable all helped by a superbly understated reading by David Tennant.

I recommend it repeatedly

As I said in the title, I find myself recommending this one whenever the topic of audiobooks comes up. The story is engaging, quite gripping at times, and the narration is pure gold. David Tennant does a perfect job at it. I wholeheartedly recommend this one.
