Summary

First of a two-part story which concludes in Volume Two. Eleven-year-old Mei Li lives in China and wonders about her new English teacher Missy, who is a "foreign devil" from America. While Missy teaches her English, Mei Li teaches Missy how to live in China. She takes her to the shops and bargains for her. She cautions her not to drink unboiled water. As their friendship grows, Mei Li learns that Missy is what some call a Christian and believes that she will live forever. When a boy in Mei Li's class dies unexpectedly, Mei Li has questions about eternity. Her family and friends grow frightened over her repeated questions, fearing that leaders will hear and punish Mei Li and her family. But Mei Li persists, regardless of the pressure to remain silent. Will Missy's God help her? Does He even exist?
