Publisher's Summary

The adventures continue for Laura Ingalls and her family as they leave their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and set out for Kansas. They travel for many days in their covered wagon until they find the best spot to build their little house on the prairie. Soon they are planting and plowing, hunting wild ducks and turkeys, and gathering grass for their cows. Sometimes pioneer life is hard, but Laura and her folks are always busy and happy in their new little house.

    "Just Lovely"
If you could sum up Little House on the Prairie in three words, what would they be?

    Time gone by.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Little House on the Prairie?

The fiddle playing is just gorgeous and really adds to the audio book.

Which character – as performed by Cherry Jones – was your favourite?

I don't have a favourite - she has a beautiful voice which is lovely to listen to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Definitely.

    Any additional comments?

We are so happy these audio books have finally come to Audible as the cds were difficult to get hold of and could be quite pricey. They are such lovely versions of these stories which we have all enjoyed listening to. Can't recommend highly enough :D

    Story
    "The Wildness Of Pure Heart"

The Big Woods have gotten too settled for Pa and the Ingalls family, so it's off to Indian Territory. There a Little House is built, one that becomes home, complete with glass windows.
This wonderful book is really enlivened by the writing: a thousand dickey birds, singing the family to sleep with a thousand songs; stars so close they sing little Laura to sleep as well (but not before exciting her imagination!); the waking nightmare of an Indian War Cry.
There is love of family here, and of neighbors (the introduction of the stalwart Mr. Edwards); there is the excitement of being in a land that is an endless sea of grass; there are wildfires, gusty winters, Santa Claus, and Indian Jamborees that may turn deadly.
As always, Cherry Jones narrates with heart and energy, and she sings the family's tunes with gusto.
A great addition to the series!

    Story
    "Timeless Americana"

This series represents an extraordinary achievement unmatched by any other author before or since, even including J.K. Rowling, who comes closest. In the nine volumes of the Little House series, Laura Ingalls Wilder (likely with very substantial assistance from her daughter, journalist Rose Wilder Lane) actually matches the writing style of each book to the age of her epic saga's heroine (Laura herself, as a child on the American frontier). The result is a series to delight every age reader, from pre-K through young adult, and even older adults interested in Americana (or just nostalgic for the stories they remember reading as children). Four- to five-year-olds will love the first book, Little House in the Big Woods, which begins before Laura's fifth birthday but includes plenty of pioneer-era action.* By the end of Book 9, The First Four Years, Laura is a wife and mother, enduring hardships and striving for accomplishments her modern 19-year-old readers can barely imagine. Best of all, although the series constitutes a look back into history, through Wilder's clear-eyed recollections this story feels as fresh as anything that happened yesterday. Timeless themes of growing up predominate: Laura's joys, longings, disappointments and triumphs are those of children and young adults the world over, in
every age. Narrator Cherry Jones is an able reader with an appropriate midwestern accent, and lends just-right feeling and inflections to Laura's story. Thank you, Ms. Jones, and thank you, Audible, for making the Little House series available! Grade: A+

*One note of caution: Parents raising children in vegetarian or gun-free households should be advised that Laura's Pa (like most or all other frontiersmen of the 1860s) has rifles for hunting and uses them to provide food for his family. Although there is no gratuitous killing of animals, and animals generally (whether domesticated or wild) are treated with a reverence and respect seldom seen today, please be aware that some animals are hunted for their meat, furs, hides, down, etc.

Cherry Jones is perfect! The book is classic. The story is engaging. The characters are men and women of courage and great heart.
