Summary
Meet Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timothy. Together they are The Famous Five.
'There was something else out on the sea by the rocks - something dark that seemed to lurch out of the waves...What could it be?'
Julian, Dick and Anne are spending the holidays with their tomboy cousin George and her dog, Timothy. One day, George takes them to explore nearby Kirrin Island, with its rocky little coast and old ruined castle on the top.
Over on the island, they make a thrilling discovery, which leads them deep into the dungeons of Kirrin Castle on a dangerous adventure. Who - and what - will they find there?

Timmy was a large brown mongrel! Startled it was changed to a black and white dog........
Enjoyable and nostalgic but again so surprised wonderful Tim was so misdescribed! Also so many references to jeans which really jars as they all wore shorts, even Anne when she wasn't wearing a dress or skirt. Such a pity as so few words are changed from the original text, even those far more outdated. Just wish it was all left as it was written. Apart from these cringeworthy changes, really enjoyed it. But...... Timmy was a large brown mongrel dog!!!!

Great family listening
I read some of the famous five books when I was young, so decided to buy this to introduce my children to something that I had enjoyed. It went down better than I expected, the story really hasn’t dated much at all, and both of my kids loved it and are now looking forward to book 2 on our next long car journey.

Memories
Bought this for my sons. I enjoyed it more than them because of the memories it brought back when I used to read it as a kid myself.

The First In A Fantastic Series
Since a lad in our dormitory at school read Five Go Down To The Sea to us I've always wanted to explore these books. The trouble was that there were very few of them in Braille in the school library and not long after that Mum said I was getting too big for children's books like these. But during the lockdown (we're still in this situation as I write this) I decided it was time to start collecting the whole series. So I got the first 8, two in the 2 for 1 sale, and have just finished this one. It was lovely to hear how the five got together and once George gets over her initial reservations and accepts her cousins she really is such a pleasant person. I felt for George as the book described her as not much as a mixer and fond of going off on her own. I wasn't much of a mixer at school and Mum and Dad often told me I should mix more but I just wasn't that way inclined. Still once I found my friends I was fine. I felt sorry for Quentin too as he so longed to give George all he could but couldn't until ... well, you'll find out as you listen. So often we misjudge grown ups as children but as we progress through life we realise that they mean well in all they're trying to do though it might not look like that in our childish years. Enid Blyton's final words in the book make it quite clear that there are more books to come and I love the way she does this. Anyway I look forward to book 2.

Nostalgic
My mum used to read this to my sister and me. Bit problematic re gender etc in 2016 but can be forgiven considering time period. Really relaxing and comforting to go to sleep to even two decades later!
