Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The audiobook best seller.
Do you sabotage your own happiness and success? Are you struggling to make sense of yourself? Do your emotions sometimes dictate your life?
The Chimp Paradox is an incredibly powerful mind management model that can help you become a happy, confident, healthier and more successful person. Prof Steve Peters explains the struggle that takes place within your mind and then shows how to apply this understanding to every area of your life so you can:
- Recognise how your mind is working.
- Understand and manage your emotions and thoughts.
- Manage yourself and become the person you would like to be.
The Chimp Mind Management Model is based on scientific facts and principles, which have been simplified into a workable model for easy use. It will help you to develop yourself and give you the skills, for example, to remove anxiety, have confidence and choose your emotions. The audiobook will do this by giving you an understanding of the way in which your mind works and how you can manage it. It will also help you to identify what is holding you back or preventing you from having a happier and more successful life.
Each chapter explains different aspects of how you function and highlights key facts for you to understand. There are also exercises for you to work with. By undertaking these exercises you will see immediate improvements in your daily living and, over time, you will develop emotional skills and practical habits that will help you to become the person that you want to be, and live the life that you want to live.

this book gave me so much to think about. There were times when I just wanted to pick up a pen and write myself notes of things to do the following day. Very sensible advice
"So, there's this chimp and a person, and they have a computer, and they go in a helicopter around a universe that's more a solar system with the happy planet furthest out..."
At first glance, this may not be the best foundation for a 'self help' book in a market filled with a lot of mumbo jumbo, but apart from the slight 'crunching of gears' between metaphors, this is a good 'popular science' book about cognitive psychology with a fresh view on tools to improve one's thought processes.
There are echoes of other models - TMI's Adult and Child tapes for example - but then Dr Peters is a well known and respected Psychiatrist, and whilst currently busy with elite athletes, has drawn heavily upon his teaching and lectures to write this book. It feels reassuring, well grounded and free from 'magic' formulas. Fairly early on, the author bluntly asserts 'life is unfair. Deal with it.'
Which brings on one point that others have picked out. There are some authors who really shouldn't read their own work, however brilliant they are (William Gibson springs to mind). Dr Peters' delivery takes some getting used to, and he's doing it without aid of diagrams. It's definitely not an actor's performance, and his natural accent may be harder work for some. However, I'm glad he's narrated it as it feels far more trustworthy. One can listen to Stephen Fry until the cows come home, but with the subject matter at stake here, listeners will value trust and genuineness.
I chose this book from a 'good reads' list, and whilst it's not necessarily the sort of thing I'd put on a wishlist, I'm very glad I did listen to it. I was so enthused, I bought the book version for a close friend - in printed form with illustrations, it's a far more comfortable read - if you have the time to do so.
