In Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin share hard-hitting Navy SEAL combat stories that translate into lessons for business and life. With riveting firsthand accounts of making high-pressure decisions as Navy SEAL battlefield leaders, this audiobook is equally gripping for leaders who seek to dominate other arenas.
Jocko and Leif served together in SEAL Task Unit Bruiser, the most highly decorated Special Operations unit from the war in Iraq. Their efforts contributed to the historic triumph for US forces in Ramadi. Through those difficult months of sustained combat, Jocko, Leif, and their SEAL brothers learned that leadership - at every level - is the most important thing on the battlefield. They started Echelon Front to teach these same leadership principles to companies across industries throughout the business world that want to build their own high-performance, winning teams.
This audiobook explains the SEAL leadership concepts crucial to accomplishing the most difficult missions in combat and how to apply them to any group, team, or organization. It provides the listener with Jocko and Leif's formula for success: the mind-set and guiding principles that enable SEAL combat units to achieve extraordinary results. It demonstrates how to apply these directly to business and life to likewise achieve victory.
The audiobook includes an interview with the authors.

I like walking. Audiobooks are handy on long walks.
I would normally avoid violence.
For example it is 40 years since I enjoyed 2nd world war books.
The Iraq war stories are fascinating especially listening from the perspective of the people who led the missions on the ground.
There were was a huge price to pay for any mistakes.
It makes our leadership challenges seem much less important.
Strangely for that reason the lessons transferred very well.
Our leadership might not be life and death but it is very important in our lives.
It is worth learning from these guys.
the information and uses are good but there only small parts at the end of each chapter, to much is taken up by chest bumping how great the seals are
I expected to get real insights to the SEALs decision making process and leadership guidelines. The book is not bad, but too broad with lack of help on continuous improvement.
I turn to this book for motivation iv listened to it numerous times now and I still listen intently I think having leif and jocko narrate it makes the book a future timeless classic in my opinion
Very well thought out. Good mix between Iraq and putting principles in to practice. Made a lot of sense and has encouraged me to make a few changes.
I found this book inspirational.
Although interesting, at times, I was a little fustrated by the war stories getting in the way of showing their leadership framework.
I am hoping that they will develop on this work and we'll see more from them.
Powerful message excellently delivered. Left me wanting to know more.
- Thought provoking, insightful, informative, clear, engaging and very well crafted.
- Answers many of the simple, yet often, hugely challenging problems leaders face and provides applicable guidance to generate change and improvement.
- I listened to this whilst training (circuit and long runs) and it helped there too! Not just the experience from the Seal Teams but the principles and the applications to business sections that rounded off each chapter perfectly.
- Offered thoughts and clear guidance on questions as i thought of them, some of them tough and exposed areas for personal development required. Perfect.
- I will now buy the book and make some personal notes as I listen again.
- I will buy the audio/book for others.

Absolutely fascinating account of practical leadership. From explaining the lessons learnt on the battlefield in Iraq where poor leadership could mean the difference between life and death this book is able to showcase how different elements of leadership are so critical to success in a unique way that makes it so obvious when applied to the business setting!! Well worth the read!!
Fantastic advice clearly and concisely delivered. Their intensity and passion for the subject is infectious.
"A Must Read!"
If you're committed to being a better leader, then this book is a must-read. The authors explain in detail how the hard lessons learned on the battlefield can translate and be applicable in the business world. As someone who is both an Iraq Veteran and small business owner, this book had a mediate applications. I am confident that if you give this book and honest listen and sincerely apply the lessons learned, he will reap benefits from this amazing book. To the authors, thank you for your selfless service to our beloved Republic.
"Get ready to get better."
After reading Jacko's book I've gotten up at 5 o'clock every day to work out which, I haven't done so I was 19. This book will change you for the better.
The book opens with the usual disclaimer that all of the stories and conversations have been modified, personalities combined, timelines changed, and some details or other parts added to make everything fit, etc., to protect privacy and confidentiality and whatnot. What follows are hours of badly scripted dialog to sell the authors' consulting services. There are few good stories in this book and several really illustrative leadership applications that will make you think. I did take a few things away from this book, but it is mostly bland made up conversational filler. I broke away twice to listen to 2 other books before finishing this.
I have read hundreds of business books but this one would be in the top 3 and most likely my favourite. Engaging, interesting and full of real life take aways. I'm recommending this book to my friend and clients but don't read it first, listen to it. It is the best author read book I have ever listened to.
"Wow. This one surprised me!"
Narrated by the team guys themselves, the authenticity is high from the get-go.
The structure of the book is solid, alternating between battle scenes, and the practical take-away, applicable to the modern business owner/leader.
The central premise is "taking extreme ownership" – as only taking FULL 100% responsibility for your actions and business decisions: can you be an effective leader, correct what's not working, and more.
It's a good book that I consumed quickly – to me it was the audio equivalent of a page-turner. I couldn't listen to it fast enough, and will relisten to it soon:)
"Great principles; limited depth"
As a retired military officer, I can't argue against the importance of the leadership principles as presented, but the concepts needed more development. A single combat and business application for each concept was too shallow a treatment.
"Succinct and impactful"
These men have done a great job of making the connection between what they learned as leaders of men in combat, and what leaders in competitive business environments do on a daily basis.
"Starts Strong...then fades"
I really liked this when I started. So much so that I bought another copy for my son. But then it starts to get predictable. Then it gets more predictable, and pedantic, and - frankly - tiresome. I wish it was otherwise, but that's my take.
"I Can See That I Will Listen To This Book Several More Times"
Clear, concise and well laid out. Each chapter starts out with an engaging battle story followed by a clear principal/ lesson learned and then a business client story that serves as an application to businesses across the board.
As a small business owner I can clearly see how I can apply these principles to help my clients, so that I can improve their experience, results and overall satisfaction.
"Simple, clear and impactful"
Extreme Ownership was very enjoyable to listen to. The principles were clearly explained and the examples from both business and war helped me understand how and why they are important. Thank you Jocko and Leif for passing on this important, hard earned wisdom.
