The 11th memoir and latest title from the internationally best-selling author and foster carer Cathy Glass. This book tells the true story of Cathy's adopted daughter Lucy.
Lucy was born to a single mother who had been abused and neglected for most of her own childhood. Right from the beginning Lucy's mother couldn't cope, but it wasn't until Lucy reached eight years old that she was finally taken into permanent foster care. By the time Lucy is brought to live with Cathy she is 11 years old and severely distressed after being moved from one foster home to another.
Withdrawn, refusing to eat and three years behind in her schooling, it is thought that the damage Lucy has suffered is irreversible. But Cathy and her two children bond with Lucy quickly, and break through to Lucy in a way no-one else has been able to, finally showing her the loving home she never believed existed. Cathy and Lucy believe they were always destined to be mother and daughter - it just took them a little while to find each other.

The truth behind the system, one I've had dealings with from many angles in my life.
The characterisation of each of the individuals involved in the tale, which continue throughout her books. I feel like I've seen Adrian and Paula grow up.
I've only listen to Denica narrating other Cathy Glass books, but she captivates me and keeps a human element to the story.
no, it was too painful to listen to in one go, but I finished it in a weekend.
I first read a Cathy Glass book because I had run out of Torey Hayden's works. I'm a teacher with experience in special needs, mostly thanks to Ms Hayden. I wanted something else that would catch my interest, and these certainly did. I've read four now, and I'm starting to look for someone else, these authors just don't write fast enough to keep up with me!
I've worked with adults who have 'graduated' from the care system, so I've heard some horror stories, it's been nice to hear about some of Cathy's successes.
I know these books aren't for everyone, but if you want your heart-strings tugged but know it's all going to work out in the end, then this is a lovely book to read. Although chronologically it's certainly not the first, it's probably a good first book to choose to meet Cathy's family.
I'm an avid reader or Kathy glass this is the first time I have purchased an audio book of hers. The book was as well written as always however the narrator really spoilt this book for me. I found her to be too child like and often felt that she was animated in a way you would be to a reception class.
I absolutely adored this book and listened to it within 3 days! Again, a bit of a different format to the usual, but for good reason. This book had me in tears more than once and I really felt like I KNEW how the characters were feeling throughout. If I had 1 criticism, it would be the accent Gill had. Having listened to many of the books so far, Gill's voice is often heard. But for some reason, in this book, her accent had a Liverpudlian accent. Nothing wrong with it at all, I think the accents add to the texture of the story, but she hasn't had that accent in the other books I have listened to. Overall though, 5* I will be listening to this one again!
I love Dencia Fairman's performance, I could listen to her reading to me all day.
Loads of emotions, as a foster carer myself, this book is so very true to life. From the permanency panel to the rubbish social worker. Thank goodness not all social workers are as bad as Stevie.
you ai'nt heard it til you heard it from the mad man www.livejournal.com/users/afro_thunder pure truth
the honesty the happy ending
would compare to any book that touches your heart makes u laugh cry and gives enjoyment thanks to the narrator's performance.
in a world that can sometimes be very cruel, its lovely to see a spark of humanity in amongst the bad. cathy glass is a woman with a lot of love to give, and is still fostering today! her openness honesty and humbleness do her credit. was bought the book damaged by a friend and had no hesitation in buying this one myself. will be buying all the others too.
When I could see I used to read a bout 1 book ever 3 months if I was lucky, now I can listen to at least 2 books a month, its great,
This is another excellently narrated and compassionate story from Cathy glass, , this story enabled you to see a glimpse of the heart ache and suffering children in care go through . A happy ending to a very sad young child brought tears to my eyes and a ache in my heart
"Cathy Glass' true love."
If you want to have an example of the definition of unconditional and selfless love this is perfect.
"Heart warming, page turner"
Cathy's books have all become big favorites of mine but I like the heart warming nature of this one especially. She goes way back to cover all of the beginning of her daughter's life and I found this thorough and enjoyable.
Cathy Glass for her love and compassion for foster children
All should watch this
All should read this book. The need for caregivers for foster children throughout the world is great. I found it interesting how similar the procedures were for foster children in England was with those in America yet so different. It seemed that much was done without having to go to court and kept in with there version of CYFD and not with the courts until the very end. of the process. I also found it sad how a child's biracial side for which they truly had no connection with would get in the way of a loving home. At what person do children become English, African or American- whatever country they are from, rather than a mixed race person?
