Quite entertaining and filled with interesting anecdotes, stories and musings without being judgemental and falling into stereotypes. And a love for Aqua that Dr Jones would be proud of!
Kept me listening. Enjoyed the format and narration. Could have happily listened to more. Author/narrator generated empathy for the main character.
Ali Davis keeps a straight face and a kind heart.
For anyone who's been in the retail trenches, or spent time in the sweat-scented aisles of an old fashioned video store, Ali Davis is your voice.
Ali has so much compassion for her customers, while still recognizing the shiftiness and downright unlikability of others. My favorite story is of Ali finding her moment of power, channeling her inner High School Principal and expelling a "jerker" from the porn basement—but things were not what they seemed.
Human nature is laid bare; the politics of singles, couples, and groups; and the "drift" from vanilla to kink. Ali records the faces that people present versus what they rent.
"Sad has never been so hilarious"
I don't know. Why do I have to write a review based on your criteria? The book is a quick read (or listen as the case may be) and totally hilarious in an "oh my God do these people really exist?" kind of way.
Ali. Why? Because she kicks ass and manages to be hilarious while asking deep social, psychological, and philosophical questions.
This is her first, but I hope it's not her last.
It's like Empire Records, but funnier, creepier, and...*ahem*....stickier.
This book will not disappoint. And if it does, then you have bad taste.
"Great Great Great Read"
So far I think this has to be one of my favourite books, as a previous adult store employee I could definitely relate to most of her stories and I loved Ali's views on sex in our modern world as well as the taboos sex has against it. She's got a great sense of humour and really gets it. Her ideas are very eloquently thought out and she makes a lot of sense. Not only is this a great journal but it does really make you think. I would highly recommend this. I only wish it were longer so I could have more to enjoy.
I found this a fun and funny look into customer service at a porn store. Alli shows a unique feminist perspective
"funny and porny - good combo"
funny and porny - good combo. I would most certainly read more work by this young lady :)
Funny and interesting. Wouldn't have bought it at full price, but the discount from Kindle Unlimited was enough to get me to try it.
I thought the book was fairly interesting. I'm trying to find books on humor to improve my comedy writing. I did get some chuckles. I found it was basically, the author, an overqualified porn video clerk (college graduate?) complaining about her crappy minimum wage job and annoying customers. Hmmm... what things would porn customers do that would be annoying?... Much has to do with why they would get the videos in the first place. So, male bodily fluid issues on the rental returns, etc. By the end, I felt like I was reading about a conscientious, diligent, kind librarian, only a video porn one. And, she covered some of her customer relationships, kept at arm's length. I'm glad that she was able to move on to a better job.
"not for the average listener but one hell of a rid"
sure you hear the stories of porn but behind the pedophiles and the addiction of the "regulars" you begin to see the world through Ali Davis you hear her likes and dislikes, her boundaries socially and politically not in a manner that is intentional but in a manner that let's you know what her beliefs are in the situations that occur after reading this I'd like to hug Ali but a five star will have to do
Anyone who has spent time behind a cash register will appreciate this book. It has a lot of truths about human beings.
"Not my cup of tea"
some of the stories were a little funny, but they were far and few between, most of the book was of the author telling us her views and opinions on certain things and the hundreds of porn tiles and box covers, it was very boring and I am very happy that it was short, for the most part I do not share the same views and opinions that she does, I got this thinking it would be a bunch of funny stories but that's not what it is.
