The culmination of nearly 30 years of reporting on Donald Trump, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter David Cay Johnston takes a revealingly close look at the mogul's rise to power and prominence.
Covering the long arc of Trump's career, Johnston tells the full story of how a boy from a quiet section of Queens, New York, would become an entirely new and complex breed of public figure. Trump is a man of great media savvy, entrepreneurial spirit, and political clout. Yet, his career has been plagued by legal troubles and mounting controversy. From the origins of his family's real estate fortune to his own too-big-to-fail business empire; from his education and early career to his whirlwind presidential bid, The Making of Donald Trump provides the fullest picture yet of Trump's extraordinary ascendency.
Love him or hate him, Trump's massive influence is undeniable, and figures as diverse as Woody Guthrie (who wrote a scathing song about Trump's father) and Red Scare prosecutor Roy Cohn, mob bosses and high rollers, as well as the average American voter, have all been pulled into his orbit. Drawing on decades of interviews, financial records, court documents, and public statements, David Cay Johnston, who has covered Trump more closely than any other journalist working today, gives us the most in-depth look yet at the man who would be president.

You always approach books like this with some reservation as political exposè always have an agenda. This tale of essentially a mobster who is running for President just gives you case after case of law suits and dealings which are all a matter of public record. If you can vote in America listen to this book. People need to know and make up their minds with all the facts.
It summarises most of Trump's career highlights- giving evidence for each accusation. It talks about his links with crime, Trump casino failures, memory lapses related to court cases, his 2nd father Roy Cone (prosecutor in McCarthy age), his real family, how he nearly led to death of his nephew's infant by attempting to take away his critical life insurance while in hospital, his bankruptcies, his lies bragging about relations with women e.g. Carla Bruni, the way he acted like his own publicist, and more.
The part where while his nephew's infant son was in hospital requiring critical care, and the fact that Trump who tried to cut his nephew out of the family inheritance (and thereby their medical insurance) would have led to a death sentence to the child. At that point I realised Donald was a villain, and the fact he is going to be president should frighten all.
This book is easy listening, and it summarises all the evidence against the competence of Donald Trump. The author is an investigative report who has won a Pullitzer Prize. In some places I feel he had been a bit overcritical of Donald e.g. Trump says he made 6 million in fundraising for his campaign, when actually he got 5 million - well ok it was wrong, but not way off, and fundraisers knows that not every pledge made gets paid.
It is a good book for journalists to get a baseline of cases to look, and then expand their research further to take on Trump, and prepare for his inevitable impeachment.
I have listened to the following books on Trump, and hopefully this will guide u into what u would like to listen to.
Art of Deal by Trump: A first hand account on how Donald Trump's working week is like - its like a journal - but please listen with a critical ear - Trump is known to over exaggerate and flat out lie. Not much in learning the tricks and trades of Trump.
Trumped by Jack O'Connell: A former disgruntled executive of Trump provides his insight and his interactions with Trump while working at Trump Plaza casino. Again listen with a critical ear, but an easy listen, and a more gossipy/Tabloid approach to Trump - it talks about Trump's attitude, behaviour, lack of concentration, affairs with Maples/other women etc.
This Book: An evidence based presentation of Trump and his business dealings, over the past years.
Each of these books has added to my understanding of Trump, and all have things that the others don't
I would listen to this book, if u wish to know the clear evidence against Trump, being more objective than the other two. It boasts interviews with many people who have directly interacted with Trump.
Loved it.. Especially the early years and what made DT who he is... And the back and forth between the past and present help create a round image of the man
"Very informative, brief."
No wasted ink on these pages. They barely read with more continuity than a bullet list, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The details that are present are useful, and paint a disturbing picture of the man who would be president.
"Good, but could be better"
If you are interested about Donald Trump, I would recommend first reading The Truth about Trump. 85% of this book's content is contained in that book and is properly put in context.
I listened to the author of the Making of Trump on a Point of Inquiry podcast, and I was very impressed and I couldn't wait to buy this book. This book has some good content and it's narrative of the Japanese Whale is absolutely excellent. However, it looks like this book was rapidly put together and it comes across as a series of disconnected vignettes which is more of an indictment of Trump and less of a narrative or explanation of why he behaves the way he does.
I think if the author spent more time on this book it could have been an excellent book. That being said, I do realize the author did want to get this book out before the November election.
"A horrifying must read for every voter"
Please buy this book…it’s important that you hear this. To say that I’m not a fan of Donald Trump is an understatement …but never in my wildest dreams (or nightmares) did I fully understand the ruthless, soulless, greedy ignorance which is Donald Trump. This book is superbly researched and immaculately sourced with first hand interviews with people who have come to know Mr. Trump the best. The things he has done are breathtakingly sleazy and frankly disgusting. He clearly has neither a moral compass nor any sense of common decency. Given the extraordinarily cavalier relationship he has with the rules of our society and the law of the land this book lays out it’s amazing his orange hair doesn’t match his orange jumpsuit. The book takes on his rather sad childhood, his business history and political ambitions with clear eyed, well written, entertaining and through detail. It’s very well written and very well read but it’s a tough read. It made my flesh run pretty much every chapter. This this charlatan is only behind by 5-10 points in the general election is testament to how divided we are as a nation. If you are interested in this election (and you should be) please spend the credit and get this book and maybe send a copy to a friend. I’m sure the hard core fans of Mr. Trump will neither read this book nor care about what it so clearly reveals (if they read). But the rest of us should know what we are getting into with this loathsome narcissist. Another good read I have in my Audible Library is “The Sociopath Next Door” by Martha Stout. Anyone listening to that book and this excellent book on The Donald will quite readily draw some very worrying conclusions. What we really don’t need is an update to the Stout book called “The Sociopath in The White House.”
"Crooked Donald Trump."
If you read this book answer still vote for this con artist you are as crazy as he is.
This book has given me reference to my curiosity that I had a when he elected go for the presidency States.
"Vignettes from Donald Trump's Life"
The Making of Donald Trump, Written by David Cay Johnston and Narrated by Joe Barrett.
This is a one-on book. Meaning it only has one purpose, to “list” historical episodes in Donald Trump’s life which in themselves should provide an insight into his knowledge, ability to learn, i.e., his intelligence; his business acumen and enterprise; and finally his moral values and care for others. Obviously, if he will be president, we should be concerned about his care for others – or if you are an American, Us.
Of course, the value of this compendium of Donald Trump’s past activities in life and business can only be valued if the author is a man that has proven himself to be of high moral character himself and has the ability to investigate and present the unblemished truth.
David Cay Boyle Johnston an investigative journalist and author, a specialist in economics and tax issues, and winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting. Since 2009 he has been a Distinguished Visiting Lecturer who teaches tax, property, and regulatory law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law and the Whitman School of Management. From July 2011 until September 2012 he was a columnist for Reuters, writing, and producing video commentaries, on worldwide issues of tax, accounting, economics, public finance and business. Johnston is the board president of Investigative Reporters and Editors. In 1968 at age 19, Johnston began his career at the San Jose Mercury News. He next was an investigative reporter at the Detroit Free Press from 1973 to 1976 and later worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times from 1976 to 1988. Johnston subsequently worked as a reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer from 1988 to 1995. He joined The New York Times in February 1995. He has also written for Al Jazeera English and America in recent years.
In compendium style Mr. Johnston presents documented and detailed facts in a dozen or more episodes of Trump undertakings in his personal life and his business life. If Mr. Johnston is to be believed Donald Trump came into life with the advantage of wealth and placement into an existing business – he did not make it on his own. Supported by his father, covering up for his early mistakes, his failures have been protected by his family or its connections.
If the stories are true, it makes one understand that Donald Trump is inept and burdened by excessive preoccupation with or admiration of himself. That is a mental disorder which means he has no empathy which in itself means he has no concern for others as opposed to his own distorted needs. He will not care for humanity. He will only concern himself with the praise of others. He has shown no success as a businessman other than those occasions in which he tied himself to underworld characters or supported his business advantages by corrupt practices such as failing to pay creditors or paying public officials for the payment of graft. That is if you believe Mr. Johnston; and of course the support of this supporting newspapers and honorariums.
The book was an enthralling and very easy read. Nothing special in writing style, just a good retelling of episodes in the life of Donald Trump.
If you are as yet undecided how to vote in the presidential elections you should read these various vignettes on Donald Trump’s life episodes. Your perspective on the man will of course be telling of you as well.
I think the author used facts and information to make his case, which is what I need to hear right now. I don't want people making fun of each other... I want data. This book provides that.
I found myself even more concerned than I was before about the amount of power that this man could potentially have in our country.
"Excellent content, well delivered"
David Cay Johnston has known his subject for years, to our benefit. Very good book.
In credible. Nauseating. Depressing. About what I expected. What a jerk. The one question not really answered: how does he keep getting away with it?
"Just the job"
I've read a lot about Trump in the past year and this is an excellent compendium of every dodgy, cynical greedy and illegal thing Trump has done. Trump is an even bigger liar and conman than I thought, the facts are all well documented by the author who has been following Trump closely for over 30 years. I heartily recommend this book.
I'm surprised not more prominent business people are coming out to denounce Trump. I'm sure if election gets closer many people will see it as this duty to attack this appalling man.
