Summary

Thirteen years ago, Moab Is My Washpot, Stephen Fry’s autobiography of his early years, was published to rave reviews and was a huge best seller. In the years since, Stephen Fry has moved into a completely new stratosphere, both as a public figure, and a private man. Now he is not just a multi-award-winning comedian and actor, but also an author, director, and presenter.

In January 2010 he was awarded the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards. Much loved by the public and his peers, Stephen Fry is one of the most influential cultural forces in the country. This dazzling memoir promises to be a courageously frank, honest and poignant read. It will detail some of the most turbulent and least-well-known years of his life, with writing that will excite you, make you laugh uproariously, move you, inform you, and, above all, surprise you.

Very Fry

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The great thing about Stephen Fry is that you - almost - know exactly what you're going to get with him: wit, charm, abundant eloquence. What surprises is his level of honesty about his life and his lack of apology for mistakes he has made. He's a wise man, or on the path anyway: we learn from the bad as well as the good, and the sooner we learn it, the sooner we can get on with the business of living, which is surely the point of it all.

What did you like best about this story?

Fry is just so easy to listen-to: Close your eyes and sip on a schooner of sherry, and you'll be there, imagining that he's talking with you, sitting in a wingback leather chair, in the Athenaeum.

What about Stephen Fry’s performance did you like?

He just never stops! Just when you think it's going to be a tedious little story about school (when he was there - and he often wasn't), prison (just once, but marvellous to dine out-on), or Cambridge (he really really wants you to accept the utter superiority of that university over any other one might be tempted to consider), he comes up with a little story about someone, or a precise, yet generally fond description of their manner, and you're caught up in the whole magnificent swing of the thing.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh. I don't think Fry would ever intend to have his reader in tears - at least not tears of sorrow.

Any additional comments?

Try it. You deserve it: Be good to yourself, and all that. Oh, and don't forget to have some sherry to hand.

astonishingly beautiful book and performance

Stephen Fry, ladies and gentlemen! Stephen; the master of narrating books; Fry.
Get this book and listen to it! such an easy, peaceful and funny listen this one was, at least to me...
it has its' dark and deep moments but that just make you think about how Mr. Fry really felt during various times in his life. This however doesn't affect the genuinely funny moments at all and it all merges to one of the best audiobook experiences you have had!
Highly recommended!

An amazing read

Would you listen to The Fry Chronicles again? Why?

It is compelling; one listen really doesn't do it justice: to get the nuance of much of Fry's reading requires several listens.

What other book might you compare The Fry Chronicles to, and why?

This book is incomparable, even to the rest of Fry's autobiographies. Fry has a much more polished written style that is less knowingly clever and simply more knowing.

What does Stephen Fry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Fry has the intonation and delivery that not only makes it a personal read but also a read where the real ';meaning' of the text is apparent.

Frank funny and full of fascinating facts.

Any additional comments?

I really liked this book Stephen Fry is an excellent narrator as everybody already knows.the book itself is full of his characteristic wit charm and self deprecating good hummer. And unlike most celebrities he has had quite an interesting and life.

accent and vocabulary

the story was, to be honest, only mildly interesting. useful to people interested in a career in writing or television.

but the way Stephen narrates and his excellent way with words makes it worth it.

Laugh out loud funny

Where does The Fry Chronicles rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I thought that only to cover a few years in a long book was going to make this heavy going but the time flew by and I loved this book
If you need a good listen try this book

Friends

I was engrossed from start to finish, although I am going through a phase of listening to media stars auto biographies. This has been my favourite so far. Fry's reading is spectacular and it feels like he is talking directly to the listener rather than listeners en mass.
