Summary
In 1978, Warren Fellows was convicted of heroin trafficking between Thailand and Australia. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Bang Kwang prison - better known as the Bangkok Hilton. It was the beginning of 12 years of hell in a place where sewer rats and cockroaches are the only nutritious food, where prison guards laugh as they deliver pulverising blows, and where the worst punishment is the khun deo - solitary confinement, Thai style.
The Damage Done is one man's story of an unthinkable nightmare. It is not Warren Fellows' plea for forgiveness nor his denial of guilt, but a story of endurance and survival and the abuse of human rights during the decade of a life wasted in leg irons. It is an essential listen: heartbreaking, fascinating, and impossible to pause.

well worth a listen
this is a book that is so worth listening/reading, I first read it a good few years ago while on a flight to Thailand and just got it for my iphone to listen to in work and found it just as intense this time as I did the first,
its not a look at me and feel sorry for me story, its a man explaining his stupidity for greed in younger years that pays the ultimate price. hopefully it has made someone thinks twice before doing the same thing if they read it.

Could not stop listening
Where does The Damage Done rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of those books where I struggled getting into work on time. I sat in the car dreading to pause it as I did not want to stop listening. There is only one other book so far that has captured me in such a way. Absolutely brilliant book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Warren Fellows tells is story of being holed up in Bangkok Prisons. Quite rightly he was convicted of smuggling heroin. However, no human being should suffer in such a way and whilst he doesn't plead pity and takes full responsibility you can't help feeling some pity as he reveals a harrowing account of what he saw happen to others, the filth and excrement they lived in, the murders, the insanity and appalling conditions over all.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
All of it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Oh yes!
Any additional comments?
Definitely would recommend a listen.

Complete pity-party!!
Most people will read this book to hear tales of nightmare Bangkok prison - sort of punishment-porn - however this book is overwhelmingly just one big pity-party!! As an example, Fellows laments that someone took away his chance to enjoy his father’s last few years of life and denied him the ability to attend his funeral. But it wasn’t “someone”, it was Fellows, he just can’t accept what he did was his choice and he deserved the punishment he got as is the way of the Thai prison system!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Damage Done to be better than the print version?
I have read the book and found the audible version better because I felt connected to the character

Makes Midnight Express look like a Picnic
Wow. What a book. It would be nice to listen to this in one session, but the contents are so horrific you need to put it down and escape back to reality for a while. The brutal regime that Fellows lived under for 12 years is beyond imaginable... and the prison guards are the worst culprits. Murder and disfiguring beatings are inflicted on the prisoners on a regular basis and both mental and physical torture are rife. This is life at its most feral
A true eye opener and this should be compulsive reading for anyone looking to make a quick buck out of drug smuggling.
Truly horrific
