Summary

Alexei knew he was doomed to be different the day he was taken to see Sergei Eisentein's Alexander Nevsky instead of Walt Disney's Bambi. Born on the day that egg rationing came to an end, Alexei grew up with his parents and the Soviet Weekly. Each year they holidayed in Eastern Europe, where they were shown round locomotive factories and the sites of Nazi atrocities.

Very funny and (almost) stranger than Alexei's fiction, this is a memoir about how Liverpool, Communism, and a mother that his teachers were frightened of, made him want to leave home and make people laugh.

One to listen to again!

I sort of envy Alexei Sayle's childhood; to a left wing socialist it seems somewhat idyllic!

Loved Alexei's parents, the holidays to Communist countries, and towards the end when he realises that he has little in common with his school friends.

As the narrator, there could be no other that the author himself. I especially liked his impersonation of his mother.

Reliably hilarious, thought-provokingly poignant.

An epic journey through Anfield/north Liverpool via Czech Republic, Hungary and back to Southport, dealing with subjects as diverse as Communion, art, ski slopes and Everton FC
along the way.

Brilliant and nostalgic

What an absolutely amazing lesson, especially as it was read by Alexei himself. It was funny, clever, educational and intelligent. A frank depiction of growing up with the added unique background.
It was a real trip down memory lane hearing about the couchette journey across France, which I did myself as a child it brought memories flooding back.
Thank you for sharing such a great journey.

A fascinating life story.

Alexei Sayle had a childhood like no other. He tells it hilariously and warmly. I loved this book.

'Lexei at his best

Alexei Sayle, one of my favourite comedians, at his best. Great writer with that touch of manic humour that brings a smile to the face in the midst of an often difficult life growing up. Great listen.

Wonderful storytelling

Brilliant observation of a young life in Liverpool, being raised in an eccentric Jewish communist family.

Why did I bother?!

As a fan of the Young Ones and Alexei in the early 80s I bought this looking forward to tales abound of his early career.
I should have paid more attention to the title of this book. All I got was over 8 painful hours of mind boggling boredom of him droning on and on about him and his family’s Communist views and meetings blah, blah, blah.
Without doubt the most boring Audiobook I’ve bought or ever likely to buy.
In 8 hours it didn’t even raise a smirk,let alone a laugh.
The book is only really advised for the most severe insomniacs.
I used to like Alexei Sayle but from now on I’ll be forced to switch over TV or Radio stations he is on because of this unbelievable dross.
Without doubt the biggest waste of my time ever.
Bitterly disappointed.
If I could have given this zero stars in each category I would!!

Alexei Sayle’s life...

A remarkable insight into the life of one of the UKs best comedians... and the minds of his communist parents.
