Summary

When she was 14, Jasvinder Sanghera was shown a photo of the man chosen to be her husband. She was terrified. She'd witnessed the torment her sisters endured in their arranged marriages, so she ran away from home and was grief-stricken when her parents disowned her.

Shame is the heart-rending true story of a young girl's attempt to escape from a cruel, claustrophobic world where family honour mattered more than anything, sometimes more than life itself. Jasvinder's story is one of terrible oppression, a harrowing struggle against a punitive code of honour and, finally, triumph over adversity.

Critic reviews

"Heart-wrenching" ( Daily Mail)"[Sanghera] tells her story with the pace and vivid turn of phrase of a true writer... Shame is an inspiring book, not least because of its honesty." ( The Sunday Times)
"A vivid, honest, and deeply moving narrative of despair, courage and hope." (Lord Lester, speaking in Parliament)

An amazing girl!

A girl who had so little support achieved such success and continues to work for other girls who experience the same problems

Poor

Great insight into the abuse faced by Asian women.
Although this was written autobiographically, I believe the narration/audible was dreadful and detracted greatly of the book.

Well done to this absolute heroine

Her story was so sad but she’s became such a amazingly strong lady and she’s truly changing the world.

couldn't listen to it

I really wanted to be gripped by this book as I had seen the author speak on TV and it seemed really interesting, however the narration is poor and I couldn't listen to it, I think I will buy the book instead.

brutal

I know that this kind of thing happened but hearing from Jasvinder on the radio made me want to listen to her book and get more of her story. I also had a friend this happened to just not on the same level it was more an arranged marriage rather than a forced marriage and my friend fortunately left him after a few months. What made this even worse was I know the area I lived around that area, I drive near there most days. That made it a lot more personal. I am so happy that Jasvinder got away and made something positive of her life. I even recommended her charity to a friend before I even knew about her story.

A HORRIBLE STORY ABOUT FORCED MARRIAGE

I have read this as a book to since I have it in my bookshelf. But to listen to Jasvinder Sanghera reading her own book makes it more real. For us who are not involved in forced marriage can find it difficult to comprehend that this problem exist since it has never been in our traditions. But we have to be aware about this and help those girls and boys who are afflicted. A very good story which happens many, many girls and boys with another culture
